Church Rejects $600,000 Donation from Lottery Winner
ORANGE PARK, FL -- After Robert Powell hit the Florida Lottery jackpot last month and took home more than $6 million, he thought of his church.

And he offered to drop his tithe, around $600,000, in the collection plate of First Baptist Orange Park.

But the church and Pastor David Tarkington politely declined and told Powell they will not accept the lottery winnings.

Many churches do not approve of the lottery and gambling but on the other hand Pastor Dr. Lorenzo Hall of the El-Beth-El Divine Holiness Church says $600,000 can do a lot of good. ...

"John Yurich", get over it. Do you just not get it? You alone came up with, "..you tell your minister how much money you put in the collection basket?", arguement. Nobody is even pushing that arguement, it came from you and you're flogging it to death.

It's ok to be honest and admit that you think gambling is ok. Don't mask it behind up spurios arguements.

Conservative Democrat, do you have a friend named CV (The Massenger/Warrior Prince)who talks to angels and frequents hell?? Please reply.

John Y.- First of all, just because someone attends a Baptist church does not mean they are born again, we can't base salvation on such assumptions. The fact that he was playing the lottery is suspect, but that still does not necessarily mean he is or isn't saved.
Where did I say he had to tell the pastor how much he gave? Please do not misquote me, I never said such a thing. You have twisted my words and should apologize.

Well obviously Powell being a member of that Baptist Church is Born Again and was probably taught that gambling is wrong. But Powell obviously decided that playing the lottery is not gambling. You stated that Powell's minister had to be told how much money Powell was putting in the collection basket. Do you tell your minister how much money you put in the collection basket? I have never heard of anybody being told by their pastor that they have to state how much they are putting in the collection basket.

All I know is this: The pursuit of quick riches lead surely to poverty. No matter the eloquence of a sermon that makes playing the lottery O.K., this one scripture should scare the daylights out of us! Of the christians I have heard who won the big one, none of them are still rich. Some of them actually received a wealthy miserable life. And they wanted to do well with the money. As christians our hearts are very charitable and the limits we are blessed with by God's hand keeps us prudent with the stewardship of such earnings as He gives us. He knows, also, how much we need so that we do not turn our trust from Him to the riches.

There were quite a few comments made on the article in the newspaper, and some were quite interesting. One said, "What was the purpose of giving the $600,000 to church or what did he expect in return?

The bible says in Mat. 6:3, "Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth". So if that was the case, why are we reading about this"?

In all our actions, we should be influenced by a regard to the object, not the observer. IMHO, this article should have NOT made the news if Mr. Powell was doing it for the right reasons! And that also applies for Pastor Tarkington for allowing it to leak out to the public!

1Co 13:1, "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not *CHARITY, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal".

Since you don't know me or my heart, hiding anonymously behind a computer spewing out all kinds of babble do nothing for the cause of Christ when you lack Charity. The *CHARITY mentioned here means concern for another’s welfare as well as the love of God for humanity, or a love of one's fellow human beings, etc.

Before we start condemning others without charity, we need to pray first that God will be with us and guide us in our speech to others. That way we will not be pushing people away from the Cross of Christ instead of towards it because our own personal Vendetta!!! We will be praying that you are teachable and will heed this advice because it is said for your own welfare/good. I will not comment anything further.

Is lottery money acceptable? What is one's motive for playing the lottery?
"Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition". 1 Timothy 6:6-9
"Two things I request of you {deprive me not before I die} remove falsehood and lies far from me, give me neither poverty nor riches, feed me the food allotted to me lest I be full and deny you and say, 'who is the Lord?' Or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God". Proverbs 30:7-9

Since your alisas is an oxymoron, you must be a Babble Lonenian with all your ramblings!

First, what church has a sign stating what kind of money is accepted in the collection plate? (There has been only ONE church I've been to in my aeventy plus years that the pastor asked that you not give if you are an unbeliever, saying we have a gift of salvation we want to give you, etc!) So you, sir, are way out of line to blast somebody in the catholic church because taking a collection is NOT exclusive to the catholic church!!!

It is almost time for me to go to church this morning so I will not continue further. I'm sure you will be responding again with all the pride and arrongance you have displayed. I am not defending the RCC because I believe it is teaching a false doctrine, but you are doing God's part by calling someone out without charity!!!

Doesn't anyone here REMEMBER The Old Testament Account of Achan ? By his very OWN MOUTH "john yurich" is EXPOSING himself to THE WHOLE (TRUE Christian) WIDE WORLD !

He thinks that the Head of a TRUE Christian Church is The "minister" INSTEAD of THE LORD JESUS CHRIST !

You see, THIS is what The SATANIC HERESY of "papal infaliblily" will lead you into:

John Y.- Is that honest? and you say you are a born again believer? Since when is deception acceptable to God? It doesn't matter how much money someone wants to donate, if that money is ill-gotten, then it is not acceptable in the eyes of a HOLY GOD. You fail to understand His Holiness, and you fail to understand we cannot condone any type of sin at any level or degree.
Is what honest? Not informing the minister of how much money is being put in the donation envelope? Do you inform your minister everytime that you put money in the donation envelope? I have never heard of anybody telling their pastor how much money they are putting in the donation envelope. And there have been other Baptists who have won the lottery and have put some of the winnings in their donation envelope and simply put it in the collection basket without informing their pastor that they are tithing money.

If we recieve the admonition of Nehemiah (chapter 5), we do well; he both commanded them of ability, and cursed them, by the name of the LORD to redeem their brethren who were at the service of the heathen: if they did it not according to their ability God would empty them, and shake them from his lap.

Considering the present distress of high levels of pearl-devouring swine, and other not men but beast-like behaviours, I wait on the Lord for the day it is made good for all the lowly and burdened people, or just assoone miserably destroy all things from the earth.

I can see the First Baptist Church of Orange Park's point in rejecting the $600,000 "tithe" of Robert Powell; who won the $6 Million Florida Lottery.

As The Church didn't want any money "tainted" with the "corruption" of "filthy-lucre" or "ill-gotten-gain" !

I personally had to make a similar Christian-"political" decision as The Church did, back in 2002; when I ran for The U.S. Congress.

The Governor at the time; offered me about $50,000.00, in cash, for my fledging Congressional Campaign Fund.

But, the money he offered me came out of His Own Political Campaign Fund--which was filled with money that was obtained through "tainted", "corrupt", "evil", "filthy-lucre", "ill-gotten-gain" & "blood money" from "liscenses for bribes": that He permitted to flourish & flow from the time (early 1990s) that He was The Secretary of State.

All my Fellow "Politicians" told me to TAKE THE MONEY !

They said that if I didn't TAKE THE MONEY; I wiykd be committing Political Suicide: as my Campaign for Congress REALLY "BADLY" needed the Funds.

But, when I reflected on how a Christian Minister's 6 Children were BURNT-ALIVE; because of the "liscense for bribes" scandal: I TOTALLY REJECTED THE GOVERNOR'S $50,000 CASH CONTRIBUTION:

IT WAS "BLOOD-MONEY" FROM "MURDERED" CHILDREN !
