Vatican Blasts Bin Laden's Claim of Pope's Anti-Islam 'Crusade'
VATICAN CITY — Usama bin Laden's accusation that Pope Benedict XVI had played a role in a worldwide campaign against Islam is "baseless," the Vatican said Thursday.
The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said it was not surprising that bin Laden had mentioned the pope in a new audiotape posted late Wednesday on a militant Web site.
"He was already named in previous messages," Lombardi told The Associated Press by telephone. "It is absolutely baseless (to accuse) the pope of contributing to a lack of respect toward Islam" and its prophet, Muhammad, Lombardi said.
In the tape, bin Laden warned of a "severe" reaction for Europe's publication of cartoons of the prophet and said they were part of a "new Crusade" against Islam in which Benedict had played a "large and lengthy role."...

I am never big on the Protestant vs. Catholic battles that go on here, but I can not stand it when a guy, be he the Pope or Pat Robinson or name any preacher you want, backs down on a comment because it made a few people upset. Generally speaking, if one follows Islam to the letter then yes it ia a 'convert or die' religion. Not all muslims follow that edict, but the quote below was right the first time and the pope should have stuck with it. I wish I knew the guy's name, but there was a former Muslim speaker on one of these radio shows who is now Christian. He basically says in Islam every deed is recorded (much like Christianity) then (unlike Christianity) when you are in the afterlife, the books are opened and if the follower has done more good than bad, then he goes to paradise; more bad than good then he goes to hell. This of course would make anyone nervous. Islam offers one way to make sure its followers get to paradise no questions asked: that is to die in a Jihad. At least that is how this convert explained things on the radio. It's easy to see the kind of religion we are dealing with here. It doesn't seem to be a religion of peace to me.
Now, how, could Osama even say such a thing! The Pope took back the truth he spoke when quoted a Byzantine Emperor,
