Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons fastest-growing 'churches' in US
The two fastest-growing church bodies in the United States and Canada, according to a newly published report, are ones whose beliefs are known to conflict with traditional Christian teaching.
Jehovah's Witnesses and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, regarded by many Christians as cults, reported the largest membership increases in a year, according to the National Council of Churches' 2008 Yearbook of American & Canadian Churches.
Although Jehovah's Witnesses currently rank 25th in size with over 1.06 million members, they reported a 2.25 per cent increase in membership since the publication of the 2007 Yearbook. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – also known as the Mormon church – grew 1.56 per cent and is listed by the NCC as the fourth largest 'church'....

Lords Day 5 (edited for space)
12. Q. Since, according to God's righteous judgment we deserve temporal and eternal punishment, how can we escape this punishment and be again received into favour? A. God demands that his justice be satisfied. 1 Therefore we must make full payment, either by ourselves or through another. 2 1. Ex 20:5; 23:7; Rom 2:1-11. 2. Is 53:11; Rom 8:3, 4. 13. Q. Can we by ourselves make this payment? A. Certainly not. On the contrary, we daily increase our debt. ... 1 Furthermore, no mere creature can sustain the burden of God's eternal wrath against sin and deliver others from it. 2 1. Ezek 18:4, 20; Heb 2:14-18. 2. Ps 130:3; Nahum 1:6.
** 15. Q. What kind of mediator and deliverer must we seek? A. One who is a true 1 and righteous 2 man, and yet more powerful than all creatures; that is, one who is at the same time true God. 3 1. 1 Cor 15:21; Heb 2:17. 2. Is 53:9; 2 Cor 5:21; Heb 7:26. 3. Is 7:14; 9:6; Jer 23:6; Jn 1:1; Rom 8:3, 4.

I am a disassociated J.W. I left for very specific spiritual reasons. This cult is loosing people. Good, loving, spiritually hungry people, searching for the REAL TRUTH!!! We all need to pray for them. They mean well.Remember,"the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one"
The fact that the United Council of Churches would list the followers of Russell and Smith as "churches" in their yearbook of churches shows that the United Council of Churches does not know what the church is!
Several apologists have suggested that due to the way JW's record their additions, there may not be this "growth" that many speak of. What I have read & beleive about the JW's is that it is a dying church. The LDS also has plateaued due to the internet & many members, who questioned leaders but never got answers, are finding answers on the internet about the lack of archeological or DNA evidence to show the LDS church came to the Americas from Palestine. And, yes, we do need more apologetics to be able to show JW & LDS members the truth about THE TRUTH-Jesus, & not their unbiblical concepts of the Trinity. These are well meaning people who have been blinded by the god of this world-Satan.
I agree with the docs comments above. I find it odd that evangelism amongst 'evangelical' churches is so profoundly underserverd...its the lowest populated ministry of all.
The argument I have heard from the pulpit and otherwise is that we do not want to be 'seen' as being like the cults in our cities etc. Likewise, door to door or public evangelism is not seen as effective. Ironically, I have only heard that from the pulpits of churches where there isn't an evangelism program, certainly not one the leadership participates in. So, its kinda a catch 22 really. My advice, is that the lay believers need to take on evangelism themselves...althouth the biblical model is that he leadership does take them out (Jesus taught by taking out the troops). In the end, the largest risistance I have found to evangelism training (like EE or otherwise) comes from the top....and I have yet to figure that one out...but its consistent. BTW: I have shared in the heart of Berkeley in the streets, and in various areas through out the us...I have yet to be turned down in sharing the whole of the gospel...ever....the truth has power...don't be fooled by the cults our my evangelical leadership that says the gospel message can't be shared anywhere and everywhere.
No, John, what you said doesn't define a Christian, what defines a Christian is,
A Christian believes that it is: Individual repentance, one cannot be born a Christian. It is Christ alone, no belief in works or membership in a particular human organization. Grace alone, Christ's grace is completely sufficient for our salvation -- again no church can dole it out. Faith alone, again, we cannot add to what God has given us, or Christ's sacrifice is meaningless. Scripture alone, you should see enough examples of organizations that Christians would consider cults, because they have extra biblical authority. Basic Differences between Romanism and Bible Christianity
Well it seems that there are a lot of individuals who are utterly incapable of logical and analytical thinking if they are joining the Jehovah Witness and Mormon Cults because the Jehovah Witness and Mormon Cults deny the Deity Of Christ and the Holy Trinity. If someone is capable of logical and analytical thinking they would accept the Deity Of Christ and the Holy Trinity because logic dictates that Christ is God Incarnate and that God is a Holy Trinity.
It would help if churches taught apologetics as thoroughly as the cults do, & formal logic as well. This is to say, Biblical apologetics, not that of Thomas Aquinas or Bill Bright. Unbelievers may be deceived, but they aren't stupid.
Could the growth of these "churches" have anything to do with the fact that they are often out in the neighborhoods talking to, or at least trying to talk to, people? The last time a "protestant" group came through my area was over 15 years ago and then they were just hanging notes on door knobs and hurrying to get away. Well, they say, God will call those He wants. Nothing I can do about it. I guess these growing groups don't go along with that. They're out there plowing fields and planting tares. Oops! I meant planting seed.
