NEW YORK (AP) - Tim Tebow took a few deep breaths, steadied himself, then plowed through his Heisman Trophy acceptance speech much the same way he takes on tacklers - fast and furious.
Homeschooled by missionary parents who run an orphanage in the Philippines, Tebow took advantage of a Florida state law to play for Nease, about 90 miles from the University of Florida campus.
Tebow has worked and preached at his parents' orphanage since he was 15. He regularly speaks at schools and delivered his message of faith at a prison in Florida earlier this year.
"Tim Tebow is the real American hero," said Tebow's high school football coach, Craig Howard. "He's the real deal."...
" The true role models for Christians are martyrs and those who give their lives selflessly to the cause of Christ and his church, without regard to their country of birth. Even then I wouldn't go so far as to idolize them the way you do with your athletes. After all, only Christ deserves our adulation." _____
"Oh Ethan liten up. The boy was born and worked as a missionary in the PI with his parents. He is a wonderful role model and it is not idolotry with me. Me thinks your jealous because you are not an American." _____
Sports is idolatry. "Christians" place sports events before attending church. Competing against one another is against everything Christ taught. Praying to win is foolishness.
Ethan you are uptight and you don't know the young man and he is a good and righteous christian. So yes he is a good role model for western christians. I do believe martyrs will get greater rewards on judgment day but I can be wrong. I also get The Voice of the Martyrs magazine. So if you want to be upity there is not much I can do for you. Take care.

Wonderful. He can therefore do the church a favor and exercise his spiritual gifts by returning there and conducting missionary work - where he's needed.

Athletes - even Christian ones - are concerned about three things: money, furthering their careers, and women. That's about it. They're avaricious, ambitious (in an ungodly way), and overly self-centered. The whole culture is self-absorbed.

Only in America is this kind of garbage equated with the gospel of Jesus Christ. What possible benefit to the church is there from this individual who has the useless talent of kicking a ball through two steel poles? The only person who benefits from it is him - certainly none of you and - more importantly - certainly not the church. This kind of adulation you Americans heap on your athletes is nothing short of idolatry.
From a Christian standpoint it's totally unjustifiable.
The thing about the Tebow family that is most striking is the advice the doctors gave Mrs Tebow to abort the young man. Of course she refused and the rest is history. The medical community is made of a bunch of men and women who believe in their minds that they know what's best. A powerful lesson we can take from this is that you can create a reality by using your imagination.
Imagine baby-killers on trial.
