Bibles banned from 2008 Olympic village
Chinese officials have announced athletes who compete in the 2008 Beijing Games will be banned from having Bibles in their Olympic village housing, and even visitors are being warned not to bring more than a single Bible with them when they come to China.

According to a report from the Catholic News Agency, Bibles will be among the list of "prohibited objects" for athletes at the Beijing housing complexes being built now for the thousands of athletes expected to participate.

"According to the Italian daily La Gazzetta dello Sport, organizers have cited 'security reasons' and have prohibited athletes from bearing any kind of religious symbol at Olympic facilities," the report said. ...

"Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil. "

I do find public displays of false statements by WND contemptible.

China's government is wicked - it should be prayed for and opposed righteously and NOT with false accusations.

"The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. "

I was not going to comment on this article because I do not put much faith in WND as a reliable source of unadulterated news, HOWEVER, something just came to mind. Did not the much aligned Jimmy Carter refuse to allow the USA to participate in the Olympics held in Russia in protest to the USSR invasion of Afghanistan? Why then, should not the darling of WND's brand of Christianity, the honorable George W. Bush, do something similar to show his disdain for this blatant display of un-Godly, un-Christian bias by the Red Chinese? Could it be that our rough, tough, patriotic Republican is more wishy washy toward Godless Communism than that sissy, wimpy, leftist sympathizer Mr. Carter? Or could it be that Mr. Bush (and his type) like to wear their religion on their sleeve, while those like Mr. Carter actually live it? By the way, I voted for Mr. Bush, I did not vote for Mr. Carter. I would just like to point out my wonder at what it is that Mr. Bush REALLY finds important.

Now the Chinese government shows its true face once more. Of course there are also some official churches that they can parade as proof of religious liberty in China. These are those churches which have made a deal with the government not to teach things contrary to the Chinese government positions. Let's hope some of the athletes will be man or woman enough to bring some bibles and tracts with them anyway.

Oh really WND? Great headline but ....

The Chinese government are not this stupid. How do you think they managed to get this far and actually win the hosting of the Olympics? By being very politically astute and very smart (and also having a huge reserve of weakened US dollars).

Would it make sense for them to bend over backwards and allow ALL other foreigners to bring in a Bible and then publicly ban high profile athletes from having a Bible?

Note that the story came via the ever reliable "Catholic News Agency" who added their own editorial comment for protestant consumption - that "any kind of religious symbol" means a Bible - despite the glaring and obvious inconsistency this causes.

The real issue is the persecution of the church in China and the distribution of Bibles in China - not whether Nellie No Mark can pack her crucifix and rosary with her where ever she goes. (To be fair to WND they do actually now touch on the more pertinent issues further down the article.)
