ORONO, Maine - A University of Maine student alleges her former professor offered extra credit to class members if they burned the American flag or the U.S. Constitution or were arrested defending free speech.
On the first day of class, associate professor Paul Grosswiler offered the credit to members of his History of Mass Communications class, according to sophomore Rebekah McDade. Disturbed by the comment, McDade dropped the class and intends to take the course again next semester with a different professor.
"I was offended," McDade said Friday. "I come from a family of military men and women, and the flag and Constitution are really important symbols to me because of my family background."

Terry Even Jesus who confronted and rebuked the Pharisees repeatedly and rightly so nevertheless had occasion when He dealt with one of them who had observed something correctly in a quite civil manner. He was not above eating a meal with them when they invited Him 'home to dinner' (I have to think they already knew He wouldn't back down on what He was teaching). And if ever a Roman Catholic knowing where I stand desired to have me 'come to dinner' at their home it would be an honor to accept and tell them of Jesus Christ in greater detail in a much more personal setting. Terry, we are not here to destroy men's lives but that Christ might use us to save them. The apostles certainly had before them the best example they could ever have in Jesus who never compromised on the truth, who confronted false teachers and teaching and yet desired not their destruction but that they would come to repentance, genuine faith and salvation.

Terry I don't understand your comment in reply to my post. Lance and I both know the we have irreconciable differences between us theologically and btw I've referenced a good deal of Scripture to him.
My comment to him was not to have fellowship with him but to give him an honest acknowledgement. As much as I hate the fact that Roman Catholicism preaches a false gospel with both a different Jesus and a different Mary and with its teachings seduces people into a horrible apostate blasphemous idolatrous religion - I do not hate Lance but desire his salvation. Yes, he is disobedient in his Catholicism to the Word of God but so was every one of us prior to being born again and heartbreakingly still can be when we yield to the flesh and not to the Spirit.

And honestly the only way I could in good conscience reject what you call the certainty of Catholicsim is that The Gospel and The Scriptures are even more, far more certain and sure and know that in them I had heard the very word of God.

Thanks for the advice, Wayne, but these things you mention (what the Bible teaches about salvation and about righteousness) are things the RCC has studied for centuries. It has not come to the same conclusions as the Reformers.

Would Biblical truth be enough reason Lance?
If you are going to reject one in favour of the other, why not at least understand what it is you are rejecting. I have not seen anything yet to indicate you really understand Protestanism. If you are going to risk your soul, which you are, why not at least try to find out what Protestantism believes and what the Bible teaches about salvation. To reject something out of hand without knowing what it is seems foolhardy, especially when your soul is at stake.
For example, do you understand the difference between Paul's teaching in Romans chapters 3-5 about imputed righteousness by faith in Jesus Christ and RCC's teaching of salvation through the RCC sacraments? This is basic. Study it in your RC Bible if you wish, but at least know what it is you are talking about.

My reaction to anyone who does this (especially priests) is to suspect their motives -- that perhaps they are shopping round for a church that approves of their favorite sins. But I've come to realize that sometimes they are entirely sincere.
