Update: Military town no longer has freedom to pray in Jesus' name
Update 10/15/07: According to a local source, the mayor announced last week that this was not policy. It was a recommendation from the city and county attorneys who have an advisory capacity, but do not set policy. He said that prayers would continue to be made according to the person's faith that is invited to pray.

Fayetteville — Fayetteville and Cumberland County have taken an official stance on prayers by their employees at official functions: Not in Jesus' name.

In May, the attorneys for both Fayetteville and Cumberland County sent out memos to city and county leaders regarding prayers at public meetings. The rules applied to city council meetings, police graduations and memorials.

Fayetteville City Attorney Karen M. McDonald and Cumberland County Attorney Grainger Barrett both asked local-government employees to refrain from "frequent invocation of the name of Jesus."

"Who am I praying to, the wind?" asked Fayetteville Councilman D.J. Haire. "I think it's downright sickening what they want us to do."

What is this country coming to? Are we really as ignorant as this, to not be allowed to pray to Jesus, yet the Pentagon is allowing prayers to Allah, with the military endorsing this??? Lord save us from our ignorance. And with the Empire State Building, in NYC of all places, after 9/11, going green for a Muslim holiday! I will not be accepting any mail from anyone using the Muslim holiday stamp, that will be new this Christmas. Let us not be so ignorant to what has happened in the past. Let us learn from our past. Endorsing and allowing things of a Muslim nature to be performed and celebrated will NOT make things better, will NOT make the terrorists like us. Our only hope for us, is that the One and True God of the Holy Bible is in control. And I am in His Hands and no one can pluck me out of there.

Bob, I would think many of my church would agree with you, especially in not attending religious ceremonies put on by the State.

As Gil Rugh pointed out in his booklet on Prayer,

Good point.

Most if not all my own public prayers are performed
before I eat a meal in mixed company, but I usually
pray silently if there are no other believers present.

Technically speaking Mathew 6 specifically tells us to pray in private. Take a look and tell me what you guys think.

Seaton's post got me to thinking again how torn I am by
issues like these.

Much as I love to hear my savior's name on the lips of so
many people, I'd rather not hear it at all on those of non-
professors or anyone blatantly living like a non-believer.

The same problem came up during a recent memorial day
celebration, where the hymn "Going Home" was played for
EVERYBODY and not just professing Christians. It got to
where I had to turn the channel because I couldn't stand
such a generalized treatment of ALL our soldiers sharing
the same eternal destiny that ultimatly will contain only
those that are truely born-again.

Acts 4
10 be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, [even] in him doth this man stand here before you whole.
11 He is the stone which was set at nought of you the builders, which was made the head of the corner.
12 And in none other is there salvation: for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, wherein we must be saved.

I'm a little worried what will happen if they get a Muslim or Hindu to say a prayer?

This is what happened during the Reformation: the magistrate exalting himself as the head of the church.
There is only One Head of the church - Jesus Christ.
The new state church is Atheism and they are outlawing the true church just as in the days of Luther, Calvin and Knox!

POST TENEBRAS LUX!

BUT where is the light today? Most christians rejoice rather than resist. They are deceived into believing that these are the "last days" and the rapture is coming ...WAKE UP!
ALL authority belongs to Christ!
Matt 28:18

Ok, just give the greek pronunciation then, in the name of Yeshua,

Or, just pray this way, In the name of the Son of God who was born of a virgin Mary, spoken of in Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, as the Holy second person of the Trinity who died on the cross but rose from the grave, of whom there is no other way of salvation, for He is the way, truth, life, and no man comes to the Father but by Yeshua, whom Paul preaches. Amen.

Eventually with enough adjectival phrases the prayer will be long enough to teach the whole Bible.

Acts 4:11-19 This is the ‘‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’’ Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.””Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, saying, ““What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.”” So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, ““Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge.

Acts 4:17-19 But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.

Whose name are they going to pray in
then???? Jesus is the Lord and the only
prayers that are heard by the Father
must be by Christians in the name
of the Lord Jesus Christ..

Of course this is another subject that
the unbelieving world can never
understand. After all they are dead.
Spiritually DEAD

The more of these articles I read, the
more encouraged I am that the end is
near and that is a Blessing to my soul.
We as Christians should be encouraged
by all the promises of God's Word.

God Bless...
