The US government is on a ‘burning platform’ of unsustainable policies and practices with fiscal deficits, chronic healthcare underfunding, immigration and overseas military commitments threatening a crisis if action is not taken soon, the country’s top government inspector has warned.
David Walker, comptroller general of the US, issued the unusually downbeat assessment of his country’s future in a report that lays out what he called “chilling long-term simulations”.
These include “dramatic” tax rises, slashed government services and the large-scale dumping by foreign governments of holdings of US debt.

The demand for satifaction blinds many of us to long-term economic consequences, which we are now feeling and will continue to until we find a way to keep our expectations from out-pacing our capacity to meet them.
Why should we marvel when elected officials can't control spending when many of those who elect them have huge credit card debt themselves.
Mr. Walker's got his work cut out for him, but he can only influence elected officials, not those who elect them.
Better economic education certainly is one answer, but to Echo Brother SB below, citizens' application of Matthew 6:33 would be much better.
I think the real problem here is SIN. Our nation has truly been blessed by God, but we are turning our back on Him. Abortion, murder, homosexuality, the removal of God and prayer from our schools and government, I wonder how much more God will take? Isaiah ch 5 talks about a vineyard that the LORD planted and placed a hedge around for protection. Although this passage is speaking of Israel, The symbolism fits our nation as well. It says that the LORD sought good grapes from His vineyard but only got wild grapes, so He took away the protective hedge. I think that is what's happening to the USA. God has taken down the hedge.
