Ohio Credit-Card Defendant Released on Bond After Reciting 23rd Psalm
CINCINNATI — A man arrested Wednesday in Cincinnati got a break from a judge after passing a Bible quiz.

When Eric Hine appeared in court Wednesday morning to face a charge of receiving stolen property, his attorney described Hine as a church-goer in hopes that the judge would set a low bond.

Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge John Burlew was skeptical and asked Hine to recite the 23rd Psalm.

Hine did: all six verses. Some in the courtroom applauded.

This case reminds me of the medieval English "Benefit of Clergy" loophole, whereby a suspect claiming clerical status could be exempted from prosecution by secular courts, since he would instead be subject to a more lenient canon (church) court. So felons would memorize Psalm 51, knowing that this "literacy test" would "prove" their clerical status & spare them the gallows. Thus Psalm 51 came to be known as the "neck verse."

Psalm 23
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Then why did the judge appear to show partiality in the courtroom?
He allegedly "got a break from a judge after passing a Bible quiz" - the whole point of this news article?
Justice is blind - unless you can pass a bible quiz

"Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?"

Good question, Fuzzy, as pointed out in Luke 4:10-11, even Satan can quote Scriptures. I think this only shows that the defendant has a good rote memory.

Then why did you use a stolen credit card in the first place?
