Ecumenical passion for moderation
These are not the brightest times for religious moderates. Mainstream Episcopalians, Methodists, Catholics and the like, they're being upstaged by the more aggressive actors at the polar ends of the spectrum. From Christian conservatives flies rhetoric that pays little heed to the inclusiveness, reasonable tones and subtlety of the ecumenical middle. And from anti-religion author Sam Harris and like-minded atheists comes the damning suggestion that moderates enable violent fundamentalism and that moderation, as Harris puts it, "is the result of not taking Scripture all that seriously."

If any conclusions can be drawn from my recent conversations with the voice of religious moderation here in Oregon, those in the measured middle are going to be heard from more in the days ahead. And they take their Scripture very seriously.

"I wonder who keeps appointing Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, as leaders of Conservative Evangelical Christians"

Jim, don't blame me. I don't support them. They aren't my leaders either, even though I'm a conservative evangelical Christian.

I wonder who keeps appointing Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, as leaders of Conservative Evangelical Christians. Sounds like the ghost of Amiee Simple McPherson is still a plague among us (who was a Pentecostal at that.

However, blunt speech can be a heavy handed weapon,

Proverbs 17:27
27. He that hath knowledge spareth his words; and a man of understanding is of a cool spirit.

Colossians 4:6
6 [Let] your word [be] always with grace, seasoned with salt, [so as] to know how ye ought to answer each one.

Gentlemen, your observations of the modern day Laodiceans is very appreciated.

If you ask me, moderates are little if any better than Atheists,
in that both groups ultimately decide for themselves what is and
what is not authoritative in the Bible thus putting themselves ABOVE
the Bible, rather than submitting to it as the fundamentalists do.

In God's eyes the moderate is probably worse than the Atheist because
the latter, though less Godly, is by nature more consistent and less
hypocritical.

Good point, CBC. Scripture Alone defines a Christian and church. It's not a scripture here and there in cultural context defines what's real and not.

"And they take their Scripture very seriously." That's why they play down or deny the deity of Christ. Of course, this leads to a denial that He is the only way to salvation. Also, Heaven is real, and everyone goes because there is no Hell. Even Sodomites, childe molesters, thieves, drunks and the likes (unrepentant) will go to Heaven because God is love and He wouldn't send anyone to Hell, if it existed. Besides, even though they "take their Scripture very seriously", which passages? They know that it is a fallible book written by men. Culture and personal experience determine the validity of the Bible, and some of it is just plain wrong. Yeah, right, they take the Scripture seriously! What a joke!
