All of you make some great points, but I'd like to add one important fact: Joel probably has not received what the old time preachers (Lloyd-Jones)use to call, "His baptism of fire." Is Joel a sincere Christian? I think so, but I don't think that he's ever been empowered by the Holy Spirit to bring sinners to repentance. As a result, the sermons do 'tickle the ears', but there's no life changing power in his word. SI in Cali
Yes, seems that in this age more are entertainment oriented so they attend a church or support a pastor who entertains them instead of taking heed to sound doctrine even if the services are too "boring" "ritualistic" and "outdated."
Joel Osteen is a wolf in sheep's clothing. He preaches another "gospel" and the scripture says to beware of these kind of men. Read Matt. 7:15. I personally think he's lost and going to hell, because otherwise he would stand up for Christ, not lay down with Satan!
It is really too bad that we as a people feel obligated to bash and criticize one another when the majority of us have very little info to draw these negative conclusions. I watch Joel Osteen and I do agree that for the most part his telecasts are a watered down version of the Word of God I believe Paul called it Milk (Hebrews chapter 5:12) there are people out there in order to reach them you have to bring the Word in their language. God can use a hypocrite, he can use a sinner, and anybody else he chooses to. Yes we need to preach hell, and where sinners go and the cost of sin remaining in our lives but use GOOD Judgement Like God has done with all of our lives. Now remember some of us are into eating meat so a JOEL OSTEEN TELECAST cannot feed us hopefully you look to YOUR PASTOR TO FEED YOU. HES NOT YOUR PASTOR SO WHY CRITICIZe him. God to Abraham I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you hopefully that is not the Words God has spoken to some of the men and women we get in line to crush and demean.
Jon,Mex hits the nail right on the head. That text you sited is often misused to defend anyone who says they preach the gospel. But notice that Paul is talking about their MOTIVE,not the message. They are preaching the true gospel for the wrong reason. That is different than Osteen and many other Word of Faith preachers who preach a different gospel for the wrong reason. We know from scripture that Paul would NEVER defend a wrong gospel. So that text you refered to is RIGHT gospel/WRONG motive.Osteen is WRONG gospel/WRONG motive.HUGE difference. You are right about the seed though,IF it is the proper seed.
Jon, Nice to see you commenting. I would say that it is questionable at best whether Joel Osteen really even preaches Christ and the true gospel. His shallow man-centered preaching often obscures any little bit of gospel that may be in his message, not to mention the fact that he is afraid to come out and really preach the truth about sin.
We were just talking about this subject in Sunday school yesterday. Even though I don't agree with Joel Olsteen and his views. What did Paul say in Philipians 1:18? He rejoiced even though Christ was preached from the mouth of a hypocrite. This is because the quality is in the seed, not the sower. This is a reference from the Evidence Bible notes.
Win souls? When does Joel Osteen say or do anything that would/could possibly 'win souls'?
I have watched him several times and with the exception of his silly little mantra at the beginning of his sermon, he mentions nothing of Scripture and says little of substance. I have never heard him even come close to presenting the gospel.
Joel Osteen is in the business of selling Joel Osteen.
The two or three times I've seen his program, Osteen doesnt't "revere" the Bible - he has one on his lectern, but doesn't actually use it - he talks off-the-cuff about everything but the Bible. He is firmly Word of Fatih in what he teaches, which is not Christian in any sense. I saw his invitation for people to accept Jesus - smirking the whole time, like it was a joke. Very Arminian. Because he is Word of Faith, Osteen never mentions depravity, sin, repentence, or the sovereignty of God. His teachings are firmly man-centered. What strikes me about him is that he never quits smirking. I don't know what's so funny.
"These are facts, at the opening of every broadcas, Joel reveres the Bible, not some other scripture. "?
What exactly does Joel Osteen say at the opening of every broadcast? What do you mean by revere? Does what he says in any way esteem or honour the Scriptures? Does what he says honour the Scriptures given to us by a holy God? What is the gospel? How can a sinful man be reconciled with a holy God?
I'm glad to see that I am no the only poster who actually likes Joel. This is all my opinion but here is my take on him. He is very sincere, he is a Christian, and he has been an instrument in leading many to Christ; far more that I ever will.
He should have spoken plainly in interviews to say Christ is the one way to God and that certain behaviors are sinful such as homosexuality. He didn't. I feel he does not want to scare people off of the gosepel, but again that is my opinion.
These are facts, at the opening of every broadcas, Joel reveres the Bible, not some other scripture. At the close of every broascast Joel invites listeners in to a relationship with Christ, not Muhammad, Mary, or Budaha, but Christ. He also asks that those who make a decision to find a local Bible believing church, not a mosque or tabernacle but a Bible believing church.
I concede that Joel is about as substantial as whipped creme compared with a steak, and that most will never go deeper spirtually, but our main goal as Christians is to win souls and I think Joel is very good at that. Plus, whipped cream is good sometimes.
Joel’s approach to THE GOSPLE is somewhat of a mistery to me...
I liken his dilivery to that of a man holding a guitar plucking on one string, But NEVER Utilizing The FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF The Other Five Strings IN CONJUNCTION WITH The MULTITUDE Of COMBINATIONS OFFERED When COMPRESSING The Strings Against The Neck, MOVING Through The Fretwork, That The HEARERS Might Partake Of THE COMPLETE EMBODIMENT Of SOUND That Was INTENDED For Their LISTENING PLEASURE That They Might Be TOUCHED And MOVED By THE RICH INTERACTION Of All THE NOTES In Their DEPTH And COHERENCY...
One Note ??? --- That is shallow playing...
I Love Joel, but I am concered for him...
He and so many others *NEVER* Speak Out About the dark issues of the day, the censorship of Christian values, the homosexual/lesbian/trans-gender agendas, sodomy, Sodom and Gamorrah, abortion, the HELL To Come, the deceitfulness of *SIN*, The Fact that there WILL BE Suffering in this life, adultery, fornication, being drawn away from THE TRUTH, THE CROSS, Christ Being THE ONLY WAY To GOD, etc...
This is not meant to be critical, BUT it is meant to SHEED LIGHT ON a problem that is A GREAT DANGER !!!
May GOD OPEN Our Eyes To SEE WITH **TRUE SIGHT** That Which We ARE CALLED **TO DO** In THE FULLNESS Of HIS WORD...
