Coming US challenge: a less literate workforce
US workers may be significantly less literate in 2030 than they are today.

The reason: Most baby boomers will be retiring and a large wave of less-educated immigrants will be moving into the workforce. This downward shift in reading and math skills suggests a huge challenge for educators and policymakers in the future, according to a new report from the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

If they can't reverse the trend, then it could spell trouble for a large swath of the labor force, widen an already large skill gap, and shrink the middle class. ...

Anna...you're not alone. In Pat Buchanan's book, "The Death of the West", he tells how the US and Europe are exterminating themselves thru abortion and low birth rates.

Excellent way of saying it as it is, Anna.
"...whilst we have committed cultural suicide through low birth rates."

Deut 7:13 "And HE will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee."

Since the Lord has decided no longer to bless the fruit of the womb, of Britain, I guess He is going to teach us a hard lesson for rejecting Him, His Son and His laws and precepts.

Worse, Jim, I cant think of sny positive contributions of illiterate immigrants! Even their children who have the opportunity to do so in their host countries are not educated.

We in the UK never had a problem with Indian immigrants and others who settled well, integrated, were educated and worked hard. The problems are caused mainly by dare I be so un-pc as to say it, the muslims.
They breed like flies whilst we have committed cultural suicide through low birth rates.
They will accomplish our decline with their return to their loved 7th century Mohammedan way of life in a few decades. We have no-one to blame but ourselves.

Paula, most Protestant immigrants from the earliest times knew how to read and write. Reading was considered essential so that they could read the Bible.

My Swedish grandfather came with a certificate from the Swedish government he was of good moral character and of course literate, though it was in Swedish at the time.

The contributions of educated of Protestants, who had the Protestant Ethic, and of Jews is undeniable. Some of the "contributions" of illiterate immigrants have been anything but positive.

Hello again "Paula."

Sorry to disappoint, but my grandfather didn't join a union, call a strike, sit down, sit in, get hit on the head by cops, have troops called in on him, nor any of the other leftist playbook assumptions you presented, nor did the other immigrants he worked with. But he did work hard, overcome prejudice, refuse government help, and provide for his family.

If you understood politics and history a little better, you would understand that it is the liberal leftist dimwits that want to keep the immigrants separated, poor, and dependent. How else to get them to vote for liberal Democrats, who promise to "help" them, but manage to keep them dependent?

Don't preach to me about immigrants. I'm much closer to my immigrant roots than you suspect. Pick a subject you know something about, and preach it to someone too ignorant to see through it.

This is just what the Republican, Conservative, Capitalistic gang wants - an illiterate work force filled with uneducated people too stupid to mobilize and organize and bring these corporate criminals to their knees. Which, incidently, Mike from New York is how those "other" immigrants (from which you no doubt came from and think are so much better than the current crop) managed to feed their families, educate their children etc.) The Irish, Italian, Polish, German, Greek etc. immigrants formed unions, called strikes, sat down, sat in, got hit on the head by cops, had the troops called out against them, got called "communists" and "socialists", were railroaded in court, but they prevailed, only to have their now educated children become good conservative Republicans who now support the same type of immigrant abuse that their forefathers experienced. Strange country, the USA, where all facets of the culture are driven by "love of filthy lucre" while claiming to be "Christian". If Christ returned today, we would put Him in Gitmo as a likely terrorist.

Less-educated immigrants are moving into the workforce. Imagine that. Is this something new? Where did most ancestors of Americans come from? How did they learn English, buy food, overcome prejudice, save money, send their children to college?

If we didn't cripple immigrants by encouraging them to stay in their racial and national ghettos, while receiving government "help," they might just do what previous generations of immigrants did to grow. Become and become known as Americans.

Maybe their vote is too important to let that happen.

I do sympathize with the motive, but such social service is not the Biblical role of the church, which is rather worship, fellowship, & edification of the saints. "Mission creep" has distracted the modern church from these duties.

It would be good work for retired folks who, if pensioned, would not need to charge much.

Attention churches: helping these less educated immigrants, especially with English classes and financial guidance, will be a great outreach ministry. Better to teach someone to fish rather than give away fish!
