SAN FRANCISCO - Wildlife officials credited a woman with saving her husband's life by clubbing a mountain lion that attacked him while the couple were hiking in a California state park.
Jim and Nell Hamm, who will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next month, were hiking in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park when the lion pounced, officials said Thursday.
"He didn't scream. It was a different, horrible plea for help, and I turned around, and by then the cat had wrestled Jim to the ground," Nell Hamm said in an interview from the hospital where her husband was recovering from a torn scalp, puncture wounds and other injuries....
It makes a difference where you hit the animal, too. If you don't kill 'em, you'll just make 'em mad. Handguns have accuracy issues, esp. in panicky hands.
Polar bear have been successfully slain by 454 Casul handgun rounds (about half-again as powerful as .44 Mag), but not without at least a second hunter backing up the first with even greater firepower, just in case.
Bear population is exploding too. I recall a story of a brown bear victim found dead with his empty .44 magnum lying some distance away at the attack site. Not enough power.
Here in MA during bird hunting season hunters are not allowed to carry the correct slug to stop a bear.
Most of the guys are with you on this Gino and carry what they need anyway.
Also croc reports in local lakes. Wildlife is expanding and these stories are not going to stop.
How anybody can go hiking anywhere in the world without carrying a piece is beyond me. When you are alone in the woods in a desolate area there are all kinds of varmints (four legged and two legged) who want to eat, kill, maim, rape or otherwise do you in. Packing a little heat is common sense. David did not go up against Goliath with anything less than better ballistics, and even Peter had enough sense to go into Gethsemene well healed. I know some states, federal parks, and even some countries have laws against packing a little iron, but as we say in the big cities: "Better the cops catch you with it then the perp catching you without it!".
