DALLAS — When Arlington, Texas, pastor Dwight McKissic spoke out last August about speaking in tongues, disquietude arose in Southern Baptist circles. And he’s still talking.
“They’re out of touch with the text and the times,” he said of denomination leaders who have taken an “anti-tongues” line.
Southern Baptists have traditionally been wary of speaking in tongues — a practice associated with Pentecostals and other “charismatic” Christians who attribute their ecstatic, unintelligible utterances to the Holy Spirit.
But Baptists are also known for allowing individual congregations and believers much leeway in religious practice. And some Baptists have joined McKissic in opposing a Southern Baptist Convention policy against hiring foreign missionary candidates who have ecstatic utterances in private prayer....
Why do all the unknown tongue talkers want to infect other churches with their heresy? Someone gets "in his(or her mostly)closet"and goes berserk and claims it is a "prayer language"given by the Holy Spirit? Just go and join those who believe that junk! And again(and again and again and again and again)LET THE BIBLE determine the doctrine Is "prayer language" found in the Bible? If so,where? I can only find people praying in known languages(Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane for example)in the Bible. I have a challenge:I have some crippled, paralyzed, cancer stricken, blind, and deformed friends that I would sure like to see healed. If some of you superduper "filled with the spirit"prophets, apostles, etc.can heal just one of them,I will give you 5,000 dollars And even better than that,James Randi has 1,000,000 dollars in a N.Y.bank for the same person.Jesus,Paul,Peter all healed all that were brought to them.So lets dont try this ole"sorry,YOU dont have enough faith"excuse. They healed them ALL If you cant, then dont claim the "gift" And just so you can stay in practice the hospitals are full, you can find them in nursing homes, hospice houses, and even struggling to get around in the mall.Get busy!
The cessationists are void of answers also, so I am not sure what the point is, cbc. I ask a question, I get an explanation. You ask a question, I give an explanation, but that's about all that happens. I don't intend to alter my convictions and we've gone round and round enough. The cessation is yet to come and that's where I stand and I've given you my reasons from scripture why I believe that.
msc No Im not asking one to do a sign so I will believe. Im just going to take you to a place were there is sick and dying and people who speak an other language so that you or some other faker can be proved wrong in what you say you can do according to scripture and if you have a sign gift then you will see conversions of those none believers so the chalendge is there for you or some one from my own country, but I know there will be no takers as I'v tryed to get them to come with me many times, and so proving my point. Also you have to take the sign gifts in Mark 16 along with the sign gifts in Corinthians, or they are all finished, you just can't pick and chouse. If you say you have the sign gifts and only use it for yourself, then it is not of GOD,as GOD gave those sign gifts to authenticate to unbelievers that it was from HIM and also those sign gifts could not be preformed by any other cults or religions as I have already said. btw,I like the way you have now started to use the word language instead of tongue, thats what the bible speaks of "languages" that were known to others, and not some babble that the charismatics of today speak. "tongues are for a sign not to them that believe, but to them that believe not"
Albert, You're asking for one to do something so you'd believe, right? That's not according to faith as Jesus taught. I think you are referring to Mark 16: speaking in new languages, taking up snakes, and drinking poison. Well,it happened in the Bible, so it's true. Jesus said some would drink poison and surive, but it's not listed in the New Testament anybody did that, so it must be others later and not just Apostles or those to whom they preached. I believe it's true, that Christian people have drank poison and lived. It's quite logical to think so. Afterall if Jesus said it, why can't I believe it to be true. Here's something for you to try out: Can you prove that such signs have never happened or are all fake? Now we're even.
Rev Joel Garrett Like I said before,"I lay a chalendge down to you or any of the members of your church worldwide",but I no not one of you nor any of your members will take it up as you are all fakers. If you could do Just one of Those SIGN GIFTS,you would have thousands of converts just like there was in the bible in fact your gifts by contrast to those in the bible have absolutely NO authenticating quality, and being totally different from the original gifts, they are powerless to confirm that GOD is uniquely with His people, not like those gifts in the bible. The apostles and their workers had gifts which no one could imitate or equal, whereas the "tongues and healings performrd by you fakers today are no different from those performed in none christian religions and cults. "The man who wondereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead"Prv 21-16.
msc, that's nonsense and fits right in with arminian thinking. Lots of people believe God for the gift of tongues and never get it. You are saying we need to have faith in our faith, not faith in the one who gives the gift. Nonsense!
Jesus says those who'd believe would speak. He didn't get as specific as you are demanding me and others to get, namely that only those who'd hear the Apostles. Oh well, 'nuff said. Been a good discussion with interesting remarks.
This is for msc, you keep asking for a date when the sign gifts ceased. Obviously, the Bible doesn't give one. The Bible also doesn't give a date for when the canon of Scripture would be complete. Are we to believe then, by your reasoning, that we should still be adding to the Bible? Maybe all of these "prophets" who are speaking, "thus saith the Lord" should write their words down and add them to our Bibles. Of course, our Bibles would cease to be inspired then because we know how many of these "prophets" have been wrong (just ask Pat Robertson).
In Paul's case, he said himself that he was one born out of due time.
But even then, he says this about his being considered an apostle:
1 Corinthians 9:1-2 "Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord? If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord."
In reference to being considered an apostle, we again see this reoccurring trait of having seen the Lord.
When we consider this, we know from the Bible that he was seen of above 500 brethren.
This would then mean, that the Holy Spirit could pick and choose further apostles, not only those who were "sent," but those sent who SEEN the Lord Jesus Christ in his resurrected glory.
Therefore, I conclude that there are no apostles today in that sense.
I know many BRETHREN who consider missionaries and the like, apostles, in the general sense of the word.
Many of these are BRETHREN and thank God for 'em!
When you are using the word in that sense, well, okay, I suppose.
But TODAY, with all the phonies and fakers on TBN, they are not using the word as such.
