BEIJING (Reuters) - Ten doctoral students from three of China's top universities have posted an online petition slamming local Christmas celebrations and calling on people to "resist Western cultural invasion", state media said on Friday.
The students from the elite Peking, Tsinghua and People's universities railed against "American and European culture" expanding throughout China along with "their technological and economic domination", the China Daily said.
"Occidental culture has been more like storms sweeping through the country rather than mild showers," the paper quoted the petition -- dated with China's traditional lunar calendar -- as saying.
It was a "failure on the part of the government to maintain Chinese traditions, while encouraging the economy"....
I don't think we should be surprised by this, although let us not interpret their denunciations of "western culture" and their supposed concern for "eastern culture" at face value. Remember, China is still very much under the iron grip of "scientific Marxism-Leninism" and as such, many hardliners (many of whom are in academic circles) naturally recoil at any expression of the free market system, which is really what this is all about.
Since when was Christianity a "western" faith? It started in the Middle East. St. Nicolas was from the Mid-East also...and churches in the East have also commemorated Christ's birth. So why are they complaining about western traditions? Nice try, China, but......... (I wonder what those Chinese PhD's are in? Certainly not history and geography).

Of course the elite students decry the local celebrations by the unwashed little people. But they pretend to be opposed to western culture, when they mean they're opposed to western business acumen which is serving to lift many of the unwashed little people out of their poverty. They would rather the unwashed little people remain in their state, to be led by those students, when they come into positions of importance.
Make no mistake, China loves western money. If they are going to flood western markets with junky products, they shouldn't cry over being flooded with western culture.
The European and Scandanivan view is to resist the Americanization of their countries...especially, the materialism, fast foods, large shopping malls (Wal-Mart is a good example where the U.K. does not want them). So these Chinese intellects should visit Europe and Scandinvian countries to see the cultural differences, the likes and dis-likes of the people. Terv. davey
