Pluto is now just a number: Asteroid 134340
Pluto has been given a new name to reflect its new status as a dwarf planet.

On Sept. 7, the former 9th planet was assigned the asteroid number 134340 by the Minor Planet Center, the official organization responsible for collecting data about asteroids and comets in our solar system.

The move reinforces the International Astronomical Union's recent decision to strip Pluto of its planethood and places it in the same category as other small solar-system bodies with accurately known orbits.

What's next? Changing Jupiter's status to that of a quasi-stellar body or brown dwarf star? Give 'em time, and they'll find something wrong with the planet we live on and attempt to rewrite history.

Well, look at the upside of this: one less planet named after a Roman god.

Pluto now an asteroid?....oh well, I'll remain part of the Council of Orthodox Brave and Relentless Astronomers(COBRA)..and still consider Pluto a planet. Most astronomers agree it has an atomosphere, has a moon, is generally spheroidal as much as the other planets, orbits the sun in a regular period of time...what more do you want? Sounds like size discrimination..lol .

References to God are being removed from everything ... even in the world of astronomy (sort of).

In grade school I was taught a mnemonic to remember the planets: Mary's Violet Eyes Make John Stay Up Nights Praying. I guess old John will just be losing sleep, now.
