Religion was the Band-Aid for 9/11
Americans are no more religious now than in the weeks and months leading up to the worst terrorist attacks ever in the U.S., those of Sept. 11, 2001, when more than 3,000 innocent civilians died, a new report says.

The study by The Barna Group looked at interviews from more than 8,600 adults from right before the attacks and at regular internals since.

While there was an "intense surge" in religious activity and expression immediately after the attacks that destroyed the twin towers in New York and damaged the Pentagon, those sentiments have not continued, the study said. ...

Very intriguing article. For years I was involved in an strongly evangelical group which majored on judgement and the end of the world {Thankfully I'm in a much more balanced group now}. Much of what is being used to see the conversion of people is fear based. JUST READ THROUGH THE OLD TESTAMENT AND YOU WILL SEE JUST HOW FAR THAT GETS YOU.

While the judgement of God is always just, nevertheless we see this scenario return again and again where Israel gets a shock, repents and after a period goes back to their old ways. Today preachers expect tragedies like 9/11 to bring in the crowds and when those crowds come they come for a season and then fade away. I've seen hundreds of so called converts come through the doors of that kind of church and they almost always end up leaving sooner or later. Fear and threatening are poor tools to bring a perosn to a genuine conviction and godly sorrow over sin.

The scriptures say that it's the GOODNESS of God that brings men to repentance and there is no better example of that than the cross.

Something else saddens me about all this and that there are no stortage of preachers who bandwagonned 9/11 and declared that it was God's judgement on sin. I think that idea says more about the heart of that preacher than the heart of God.

The Parable of the Tares comes to mind.

I knew a Catholic coworker who apostasized over 9/11, although it may have been only a pretext (I did try to witness to him by email). As I've observed, when a man dumps his wife, it becomes much easier to dump other inconveniences as well.
