Americans' view of morality

CHICAGO â€” Cheating on your income taxes is almost as bad as cheating on your mate, and smoking pot isn't as bad as drinking to excess.

That's what a cross section of Americans reports in the Pew Research Center's latest "Social Trends" study, released Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

The survey sought to present a blunt test of what Americans think is moral by measuring the responses to 10 questions. It recognizes that questions of morality are generally sophisticated and complicated.

"The survey did not measure intensity of feeling. ... Judgments about right and wrong are by nature profound, and in real life often nuanced and situational. By contrast, this survey questionnaire is a blunt instrument," the research center says in its report. ...

This survey reminds us why we must use God's holy law in evangelism to bring conviction of sin before preaching grace. The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul. It also reminds us there is still work to do, so get out there and find a sinner and let the sharp needle of the law make way for the silken thread of grace.
