“Somebody should be held accountable for these kids. They run wild like a pack of wolves, where's the parents?"

Answer: living for the present, for themselves. Kids are too much trouble, somebody else's problem (the daycare worker, the schoolteacher, the youth pastor, the shrink, the court, et al.).

2 Kings 2:23-25 comes to mind.

Pity the UPS driver didn't have Elisha's
God-given "clout", as it were.

The police chief asks "Where are the parents?"

He might ask "Who are the parents?"

Is it Daddy, who hasn't been sighted since the kid was two months old?

Is it Grandma, who is left with the responsibility of looking after the kid?

Is it Mommy's latest live-in boyfriend?

Erase all thought and fear of God from a community, and selfishness and sensuality would absorb the whole man. Appetite, knowing no restraint, and suffering, having no solace or hope, would trample in scorn on the restraints of human laws. Virtue, duty, principle, would be mocked as unmeaning sounds. A sordid self-interest would supplant every feeling; and man would become, in fact, what the theory of atheism declares him to be--a companion for brutes.

McGuffey Fifth Reader, designed for the ten-year-olds of our American frontier
