Airplane Mechanic Sucked Into Jet Engine, Killed at El Paso Airport
EL PASO, Texas — An airplane mechanic was killed Monday morning after he was sucked into a jet's engine while passengers were boarding from the tarmac, officials said.

"A mechanic walked in front of the engine and was pulled into the engine," National Transportation Safety Board spokeswoman Lauren Peduzzi said.

She said she didn't know if any passengers saw the accident as they boarded Continental Airlines flight 1515 to Houston. A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said the worker was sucked into the right engine of the 737-500. ...

The A6's engines have far less thrust (and thus airflow) than a modern turbofan. He probably survived because he didn't make it thru the ducting to the compressor stage turbine blades.

"I bet the poor mechanic didn't know the engine was spooled up since he likely had ear protection on."

Even with ear protection on, you still know when the engine is on. It's more likely he got over-confident. Plus the engine might have gotten rev'd up without him being warned they were going to do that, which is possible since it seems they were working on it or were testing it. Since he was completely sucked up, my guess is he wasn't paying as much attention as he should have under the circumstances.

John, I think you mean "sickles", right?

I bet the poor mechanic didn't know the engine was spooled up since he likely had ear protection on.

Sometimes the opposite occurs: flight-deck crewmen on aircraft carriers get blown overboard by the exhaust.

Jets get all that thrust by drawing a tremendous quantity of air per second, so runways must be kept clean. FOD (Foreign Object Damage) is a major aviation issue, both inside and outside aircraft.

Amazing how many different types of "sycles" God has and
uses to physically "harvest" his creatures and people from
his creation.

"Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not."
