Churchman: Right jolly old elf promotes ‘idol worship’
BETHEL — While controversy swirls over a substitute teacher who told first-graders that Santa Claus doesn’t exist, a local dairy farmer and church deacon has put the same message in a very public place.
By erecting a sign along the eastbound side of I-78, between the Bethel and Grimes exits, Leonard H. Martin has taken it upon himself to shatter the myth of Santa Claus for any youngster able to read the message from the back seat of a car as their parents drive by.
It marks the second consecutive year that Martin has posted what he termed a spiritual message on his land adjacent to I-78.
Last year, the sign stated, “Santa is a myth, lying to our children brings moral decay.”...
Yes, there is no Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, or any of the others that have been told to kids to believe in. Now you try to tell them about God and Jesus Christ....They may well believe that God and Jesus fall in the same catagory. They lose faith in the very ones they have trusted in because they have lied to them. Oh yes there is that other verse in Gods word about lying....
Walt, for some unknown reason, I did have some commentary about these verses which disappeared somewhere! as part of the JFB commentary put it, 1. Judge not, that ye be not judged—To "judge" here does not exactly mean to pronounce condemnatory judgment, nor does it refer to simple judging at all, whether favorable or the reverse. The context makes it clear that the thing here condemned is that disposition to look unfavorably on the character and actions of others, which leads invariably to the pronouncing of rash, unjust, and unlovely judgments upon them....
(ASV) Matthew 7 1. Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured unto you. 3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me cast out the mote out of thine eye; and lo, the beam is in thine own eye? 5 Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
The wolves did pretty well with the "revenge" slant they put on his straightforward comment:- "Martin, who has seven children between the ages of 2 and 15, said his family believes, “Christmas is just another day.” They don’t exchange gifts. And they don’t put cookies out for Santa. When asked why he would post a sign that could spoil the Santa experience for children, Martin said simply it’s a form of revenge in a world filled with messages he finds repulsive. “There is a lot of advertising out there that is shattering my young innocent children’s lives,” he said. “This is a fair opportunity to present the truth.” "
I expect they would like to lock up his two year old in case they let the truth slip to other two year olds ....
I believe in the Freedom of speech, and Santa Claus is a myth. However, is this: (ASV) Matthew 10 16. Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
I bet Santa is going to leave a lump of coal in his sock!
