A Scripture-quoting hate crime directed at gay and lesbian students at Lane Community College has spawned a series of forums beginning next week that will examine what the Bible has to say about sexual orientation and gender identity.
The clergy-led panel discussions are in response to an incident last May in which someone scrawled hateful words - and a citation from Leviticus - on a banner at the offices of the Queer Straight Alliance, an LCC student group, said Susan Matthews, the college's Multicultural Center director.
The act of vandalism "was very frightening, and stressed the students tremendously," Matthews said. "It also raised questions about the Bible."
In seeking an appropriate response, Matthews said she met several times over the summer with members of the Religious Response Network, a local interfaith group that originally formed in response to anti-gay rights measures in...
The Bible preaches against lust, and the Sodomy movement is based totally and COMPLETELY on lust. The Bible does preach against Sodomy, but it also teaches to try and bring them in, not throw them out. Not in the "except them into the church" way, but the "preach the Gospel to them, and bring them into the fold of Christ" way. This is not hate, but love. The only hate we should have is toward Sodomy, lust, and all other sins.
Our ministry to homosexuals is not as the sinless ministering to sinners, but as fellow sinners who bear testimony to the reality of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
The Gospel always comes as both judgment and grace. But the last word must always be grace. Our duty is to tell the truth about homosexuality -- to name it as Scripture names it. But our responsibility hardly ends there, for our next task is to speak the word of grace, and to present the Gospel of salvation by grace through faith in Christ as our substitute, by whose blood we have been bought with a price.
To the homosexual, as to all others, we must speak in love, never in hatred. But the first task of love is to tell the truth, and the sign of true hatred is the telling of a lie.
Those who genuinely love homosexuals are not those who would revolutionize morality to meet their wishes, but those who will tell them the truth, and point them to the One who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
I'd like to make a more positive and encouraging comment about the prevalence of all the "hate speech" initiatives across the world.
When I was converted to Christ, one of the biggest errors in professing Christianity was the widespread endeavouring to be 'nicer than God'. This includes all the nonsense that God loves everyone indiscriminatly the same - e.g. 'Christ preached tolerance too, you know', 'love the sinner, hate the sin' nonsense.
The truth is God is angry with the wicked every day, and if the outcome of all this "hate speech" stuff is that the world and more importantly the Church understand this biblical truth then all glory and praise to God!!
God's Word is a two-edged sword and will not return unto Him void.
Quite correct, RosaMarie. I would hope that these were not Christians who did the vandalizing. This school needs forums for how homosexuals are to develop normal, healthy relationships. The best way of course, is to become a Christian. They need Gil Rugh's booklet, or something like it,
What a mess. I hope that person who vandalized wasn't really a Christian. We can tell the truth without breaking the law or damaging property.
As far as these gay and lesbians studying the Bible to decide whether it's God inspired or true, well, I think the only thing I can do with this is pray that at least some of them hear God's voice and repent. I know that going in, probably most of them will be looking to discredit or neutralize what is written in the Word of Life, but maybe there are souls being prepared for salvation through this.
It may be popular in today’s culture to defend and promote sexual perversion in the name of “tolerance” and “diversity”; but the truth is, God hates such acts and judges them severely. Homosexuals do not need, and must not be given, encouragement to continue in their destructive, sinful behavior. In accordance with the “Laws of Nature’s God” (Declaration of Independence), homosexuals acts must be recriminalized by the civil government (I Tim. 1:8-11, Rom. 13:4). Upholding true law in such a way is also showing true love. Ecclesiastes 8:11: “Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.” Homosexuals should be told that they, as all sinners, are lost and headed for hell unless they repent, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and are saved (Rom. 10:13). Christians must stand against the New Sodom which has sprung up in our midst. At the same time, we must share the gospel with the sodomites and pray that some will be born again and justified by faith in Jesus Christ (Jn. 3:3, I Cor. 6:11).
The Bible, Old Testament and New, has much to say about homosexual acts such as sodomy. The Bible is clear that God has declared such acts to be sin. For instance, God calls the homosexual acts committed by the men of Sodom “very grievous” (Gen. 18:20). He also calls those perverse sexual acts “filthy,” “wicked,” “ungodly,” and “unlawful” (II Peter 2:6-8). In the book of Jude, verse 7, God explains that the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for “fornication” with “strange flesh.” In this, God contrasts homosexual sex acts with sexual relations between one man and one woman in His created, holy institution of marriage where the two become “one flesh” (Gen. 2:24). God has forbidden and cursed all fornication, the joining of human beings as “one flesh” in a sexual union outside of marriage (I Cor. 6:9-11). In I Corinthians 6:15-20, He condemns the sexual acts men commit with women prostitutes because the two become “one flesh” outside of marriage. Homosexual acts are especially evil in that they are “fornication . . . [with] strange flesh.” Leviticus 18:22: “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” Leviticus 20:13 TOO. Romans 1:26 labeling “lesbianism” unnatural, says these women “change” the natural for that which is "against nature".
