BAGHDAD -- With arms outstretched, the congregation at National Evangelical Baptist Church belted out a praise hymn backed up by drums, electric guitar, and keyboard. In the corner, slide images of Jesus filled a large screen. A simple white wooden cross adorned the stage, and worshipers sprinkled the pastor's Bible-based sermon with approving shouts of ''Amen!"
National Evangelical is Iraq's first Baptist congregation and one of at least seven new Christian evangelical churches established in Baghdad in the past two years. Its Sunday afternoon service, in a building behind a house on a quiet street, draws a couple of hundred worshipers who like the lively music and the focus on the Bible.
''I'm thirsty for this kind of church," Suhaila Tawfik, a veterinarian who was raised Catholic, said at one service. ''I want to go deep in understanding the Bible."
It would be interesting to hear what the Southern Baptists are doing in Iraq, after that evil killing of their missionaries during the first part of the Iraqi war. This group doesn't sound much more Christian than the Catholic nonsense. Pictures of Christ? :-(
I see they could use the following comments also besides 800,000 who mistakenly take the Catholic Church as its lead.
33K, you might be right on that issue. The more I study these distinctions, the more it consumes my dispointment in the independents.
Lance, I think that is very true. That is clearly how the Baptists grow their numbers. Just look out toward California with some of these fastest growing "purpose driven life" ministries and these Baptist ministers know how to draw a crowd. It is a shame.
I'm sorry that I believe that independency is the root of all these problems, and I firmly believe they are primary root of the apostate presbyterian churches.
So I firmly disagree with you that idolatry has nothing to do with independency.
If I believed these independent churches were the true church (wellbeing), you can be assured I would be back there. However, over the past few years of digging into the history of these sects, and the schism it causes in the body of Christ, there is not any doubt in my mind that it is one of the worst things to ever hit the Christian church.
Further, I do think between the heretical teachings of the Catholics, and much of the independents who promote much of these doctrines in different colors, I suspect the final 7 vial judgements will be severely correcting this error.
The whole world laughs at the disunity and crazy doctrines and worship promoted by the independents around the world, and that will change once severe correction hits the church and the rest of the world with a bit more force.
Sorry to be so bold, but I have lost all interest in the independents globally.

The independents are at it again to destroy and divide the Christian world from the truth.
