Archbishop of Canterbury to Set Precedent
LONDON - Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams said Tuesday he will attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II, becoming the first serving leader of the Church of England to attend a pontiff's burial.

At the funeral, he would be wearing a ring presented by Pope Paul VI to a previous archbishop of Canterbury, Michael Ramsey, Williams' office said.

Ramsey, who was then retired, attended Paul VI's funeral.

Parliament has lots of cheering and jeering too, doesn't it? Yet that's much more edifying than the dumb silences and mechanical applauses during Congressional speeches.

I'm definately excommunicated from the Celtic supporters club.

As for 'football' I don't know what that is!!!

BTW what does this have to do with ABC?

Neil, you should also point out the Pope try to cozy up with Muslims and Hindus, and knows what else.

"Pontiff" is an apposite term, for the Papacy is indeed building ecumenical "bridges." JP2's audience with the Dalai Lama is one example.

You appear to be a Celtic supporter?

As for the myriad of other religions that would send their P.C. representation, together with the various polititians vying for votes of whatever creed, well what can we expect in these days of spiritual, doctrinal and moral decline?

While you are all enjoying a nice swipe at the ABC and the CofE, please remember that representatives of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, as well as a multitude of heads of state (GW Bush, Tony Blair et al) will be attending.

I dare say that if the multitudes of protestant "sound" splinter groups all sent one person, they might well outnumber everyone else!

Arthur - the ABC is an apostate.

You are quite right about the 39 Articles, unfortunately the Anglican Church is looooonnnng gone.

The Thirty Nine Articles is the historical doctrinal standard of the Church of England and the world wide network of Episcopal Churches, in communion with the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Article 31 reads : "The offering of Christ once made is that perfect redemption propitiation, and satisfaction, for all the sins of the whole world, both original and actual; and there is none other satisfaction for sin, but that alone. Wherefore the sacrifice of MASSES, in the which it was commonly said, that the priest did offer Christ, for the quick and the dead, to have remission of pain or guilt, were BLASPHEMOUS fables, and dangerous deceits." unquote.!!

Ahem!...does anybody know if the Archbishop of Canterbury is in communion - with the Archbishop of Canterbury.????

...why doesn't any of this surprise me? Perhaps they should formally change their names from Protestants to Plaudits and expunge all claims to their heritage.

Of course, I'm just being sour. The reformation was a great mistake that needs rectifying ....NOT!

Why is it that this ABC can set a precedent in this area and doesn't have to follow the 400 year old historical precedent. Sounds like hypocrisy. Whatever, who cares?
