With witticisms such as "The best vitamin for a Christian is B-1" and "God answers knee-mail," church marquee messages are often pithy enough to give one pause and, many a pastor or minister would hope, to inspire people to venture inside.
The messages have filled a half-dozen books, and favorites are widely circulated on the Internet. A Texas man even developed a computerized "church sign generator" that allows people to create their own sayings on a simulated marquee.
Jack Frank, a member of the Dormont United Methodist Church in suburban Pittsburgh, has been posting messages since the church bought a changeable sign to replace a bronze and copper one that had been stolen. A recent message: "When down in the mouth, remember Jonah. He came out all right."
Frank, who gets ideas from friends and through e-mails, tries to change the sign every couple of weeks. "It's not unusual when you're...
Hi Allen, i have not come acros you before, so welcome to the threads.
Good point about the "Xmas" message, worldlings flock to once a year,to hear. Although we rejoice that Christ came into the world to save sinners, December 25th has become so important to so many, whom profane the Sabbath day once a week.
As you say, the scripture exhorts preaching Christ and Him crucified , and we are surely thankful to those whom would preach "flee from the wrath to come",rather than "little donkey, carry Mary", making everyone go ah,how sweet, whose souls are on the verge of hell's torments !
I seen one a couple weeks before Christmas that read ," beat the Christmas rush come to church this Sunday" I lol when I seen that because we had just brought up topic that preachers should preach a sermon on Hell or Calvary instead of the traditional plays or sermons they hear or see every year. Many only show up once a year and they're heard the same Christmas sermons everytime.
The Baptist church in Addlestone, the next town to New Haw, is always placing up "witty" comments on their notice board, to get the people "in."They do get their "reward" in this matter, just like the Pharisees in the gospels.
God has PROMISED to bless His own WORD ! (Is. 55:8-11)It shall NOT return unto Him void !
Nowhere do i read in my Bible that God has promised to bless witty comments.!
Amazing to know that C.H.Spurgeon laid the first stone of that church, there is a plaque to say so.How things have certainly deteriorated.
One day people are going to get a real shock when they realise just what is gold, silver and precius stones, and what is wood, hay and stubble.
