Oklahoma City, OK, Apr. 23 (UPI) -- Oklahoma voters will be asked this fall whether a ban on gay marriage should be inserted in the state's constitution.
The House gave final approval to the proposed amendment Thursday. Oklahoma will join a handful others states where voters will face similar propositions this fall.
Oklahoma already has a law that prohibits gay marriage but supporters want a constitutional amendment to strength the prohibition. The proposed amendment would define marriage only as a union of one man and one woman.
Republican Sen. James Williamson, the primary sponsor of the bill, said the amendment is necessary because a trial judge could overturn the state law and leave the state without any prohibition.
