LANSING -- Michigan's gay community is no longer in the closet at the state Capitol, now that Gov. Jennifer Granholm has opened the door.
Granholm, Michigan's first Democratic governor in 12 years, is also the first to use her executive powers to support the state's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.
For instance, during the Michigan Pride Festival on June 14 in Lansing, three of Granholm's openly gay staff members read her proclamation declaring June as Gay Pride Month in Michigan.
"It is awesome, and it's about time," said Sarah Mieras, spokeswoman for Michigan Pride.
