"Thou shalt not do any work" is what the Bible says when it comes to the Sabbath Day, but now a legal decision could mean no play as well. In the first-ever ruling of its kind in America, Oregon's state court of appeals says the state's high school activities association must make a reasonable effort to accommodate religion when scheduling sports tournaments.
The Oregonian reports that the case was brought by the Portland Adventist Academy because its basketball team was barred from participating in the state championships.
The decision, however, extends beyond merely basketball, the paper said. It also includes 80 other state championships in 16 different sports and activities organized by the Oregon School Activities Association, or OSAA. Other competitions include dance, cheerleading and music events.
