A US marketing consultant who described Aids as the "gay plague" has withdrawn his name from consideration for a government commission on the disease, amid controversy over his remarks.
Jerry Thacker was nominated on Thursday to Presidential George W Bush's advisory panel on HIV and Aids.
Friday's announcement came after the White House said that Mr Thacker's comments did not reflect President Bush's own view of the disease.
The president believes "that people with AIDS need to be treated with care, compassion," said a White House representative.

I'm very sad that Mr. Thacker withdrew; the fact that he got HIV from a contaminated transfusion is something that needs to be repeated. About 10% of gay men carry the AIDS virus, vs. < 0.1% of heterosexuals who do not use injectable drugs. Account for transfusions like those Mr. Thacker received, and the difference is even greater.
For those of you who have avoided fornication and drug use, please consider donating blood. This is especially crucial as many homosexual men lie to donate blood, and there is pressure to eliminate prohibitions against homosexual donations.
I heard this man speak while I was a student at Baptist Bible College nine years ago. His amazing testimony had me in tears. I have a copy of his book, "When AIDS Comes Home". I have wondered about him over the years.
For the record, the article did say he was HIV Positive.
The one thing the article doesn't mention is that Thacker himself has AIDS. His wife received a tainted blood transfusion. The disease has infected both of them and their daughter. I'd say he knows about compassion AND cause.
Keep up the good work, Sensei.
