JERUSALEM ‚ÄĒ Ten Israelis were killed and 15 others were wounded Friday night when Palestinian gunmen opened fire on a group of Jews walking through the West Bank city of Hebron.
An army official said troops and civilians had been caught in a complex ambush, and that exchanges of fire continued 90 minutes after the initial attack.
There were reports that one of the slain Israelis was a high-ranking military official.
The Palestinians opened fire on the Jews as they wound their way into the city to mark the beginning of the Jewish Sabbath at the Tomb of the Patriarchs, the burial cave of the biblical Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and a place revered by both Muslims and Jews.
