Canadian Humanists want status as religious charity

A Toronto-based humanist group is mounting a constitutional challenge of rules around charitable status, arguing that the tax law should treat secular humanism the same way it does religion.

Revenue Canada has already refused to register the Humanist Association of Toronto as a charity, partly because there is no evidence the group prays to "a deity or supreme being."

Being a "mere philosophy of life" is not enough to qualify as a religious charity, the agency said in rejecting the association's application for status.

A spokeswoman for the group called the tax department's definition too restrictive and said humanism serves much the same function as a religion, even if a god or gods are not involved. ...
