Bacteria linked to SIDS

Monash University researchers have unravelled a link between bacterial infection and sudden infant death syndrome, offering hope for preventing the mysterious illness that kills about 150 Australian babies a year.

The researchers believe even mild bacterial infections increase levels of a brain steroid that causes drowsiness, so babies don't wake up when they have breathing problems, said Saraid Billiards, the PhD student who led the team.

The SIDS-bacteria link has been observed before, but this is the first time it has been explained.

"It seems possible that's why they're dying - because it sedates them to such an extent that they can't wake up," Ms Billiards said. ...
