TEHRAN, Iran, June 22 — A powerful earthquake jolted northwestern Iran on Saturday, killing at least 500 people and injuring around 1,600 more, Iran’s state-run media reported. The quake reportedly measured at least 6.0.
THE OFFICIAL Islamic Republic News Agency quoted the head of the provincial Red Crescent Society, Majid Shalviri, as saying most of the deaths occurred in the Bou’in-Zahra area of Qazvin province.
State-run radio reported 500 people were killed and 1,600 injured.
The quake struck shortly after dawn Saturday and had a magnitude of 6.0, the news agency said. It had said earlier that seismologists’ preliminary estimate of the magnitude was 5.2.
