Pakistan says Pearle kidnap suspect held, Pearle still alive

Police escort three men suspected of involvement in the abduction of U.S. reporter Daniel Pearl out of the High Court in Karachi on Tuesday.

KARACHI, Pakistan, Feb. 12 â€” The alleged mastermind in the abduction of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl has been arrested in the Pakistani city of Lahore, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday. Separately, police in Karachi told NBC News that the initial questioning of Ahmad Omar Saeed Sheikh indicated that the American was still alive.

SAEED was being sent to Karachi for interrogation, Tasneem Noorani, secretary of the Interior Ministry, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Noorani said he was arrested Tuesday afternoon but refused to give further details. Pearlâ€™s whereabouts remain unknown but police in Karachi said they believe heâ€™s still in the southern Pakistani port city where he was abducted on Jan. 23.

The arrest was announced one day before President Pervez Musharraf is to meet President Bush in Washington. The kidnapping had embarrassed the Musharraf ...
