"American Taliban" John Walker hears charges; Parents say he's innocent!

With his head shaven and his stare fixed straight, John Walker Lindh is driven to federal court Thursday morning.

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 24 â€” A shaved and shorn John Walker Lindh heard charges in a federal court Thursday that he conspired to kill Americans in Afghanistan. The 20-year-old Californian who has come to be known as the â€œAmerican Talibanâ€ was not asked to enter a plea at the brief hearing, but his parents and attorneys immediately took to the microphones outside the courthouse to proclaim his innocence and accuse the U.S. government of denying him access to legal counsel while in military custody.

â€œJOHN LOVES AMERICA. We love America,â€ his father, Frank Lindh, said after the hearing.

â€œJohn did not take up arms against America, he never meant to harm any American and he never did harm any American. John is innocent of these charges,â€ Lindh said, adding in a statement later that his son himself maintained his innocence.
