As New York lawmakers maneuvered toward a vote on gay marriage, President Barack Obama told his first-ever fundraiser for gay donors Thursday that they should "keep up the fight" for equality.
"I believe that gay couples deserve the same legal rights as every other couple in this country," the president said at a fundraiser in Manhattan.
But the president stopped short of embracing same-sex marriage.
