(AP) (PHILADELPHIA) Tourism officials in Philadelphia are reaching out to an upscale, well-traveled group to try to lure more visitors to the city: gays and lesbians.
Bill Gehrman, who's with the city tourism bureau, says he wants to get word out that the city is gay-friendly. Gehrman is the founder of the Philadelphia Gay Tourism Caucus.
This month's issue of Passport magazine, a travel publication for the gay community, features an article touting Philadelphia as a must-see destination.
Community Marketing, a gay-oriented travel-marketing firm, says gays and lesbians spend $54 billion a year on travel. And it says 91 percent of gays take annual vacations, compared with the national average of 64 percent.
