May 31 — Timothy McVeigh was expected to tell his lawyers Thursday whether he wants to ask a court to delay his execution date once more. McVeigh believes the 4,000 pages of documents belatedly unearthed by the FBI are worthy of judicial review, one of his lawyers said, but the convicted Oklahoma City bomber has not yet decided whether to seek a stay. His execution is now set for June 11.
ATTORNEY GENERAL John Ashcroft made clear Wednesday that the government would fight any further delay, saying that failure to carry out the sentence “would deny justice for the victims of this crime and for the American people.”
McVeigh attorney Rob Nigh said he would meet with his client Thursday morning at the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, Ind., and would seek his approval on a request to block the execution.
