Surprisingly, it wasn't those fancy little toiletries that proved most tempting for sticky-fingered Australians, instead magazines and books were the first to go, the Hotels.com survey found. Australians weren’t the worst offenders. Travellers from 29 countries took part in the survey, with the French, Canadians, Americans, Chinese and Swedish even more likely to pocket something extra from their hotel stays. The top three nationalities for hotel theft were Indians (38 per cent), Mexicans (40 per cent) and Colombians (57 per cent).
Towels and linens were the items of choice for guests from the US, Sweden, Italy, Hong Kong, Canada, Norway and Ireland, while the Chinese were most likely to steal furnishings including lamps, clocks and artwork.
