Although it adds a modern twist, "!HERO" rarely strays from biblical text. In that sense, it's a more traditional piece than something like Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ," which invited public outcry by including a hallucination sequence not in the Bible.
The characters are also given new names. The Christ character is called Hero; Peter becomes Petrov; Mary Magdalene becomes Maggie; and Judas becomes Jude. But their actions and personalities are true to their biblical counterparts.
"The music . . . tells the age-old story of Jesus in a way that communicates to a culture that has grown up on MTV and video games," Lisa Ryan, co-host of "The 700 Club," wrote in a review. "It has the passion and entertainment of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and 'Godspell,' only staying true to gospel message."
