Helicopter Crashes While Trying to Rescue Climbers on Mount Hood
TIMBERLINE LODGE, Ore. — An Air Force Reserve helicopter attempting to rescue climbers who fell into a crevasse crashed on Mount Hood Thursday. Three of the nine climbers were killed in the fall into the crevasse near the summit of the 11,240-foot mountain.
One of the six crew members in the HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter was critically injured but was later upgraded to serious at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, said hospital spokeswoman Lise Harwin.
By late evening, all the injured climbers had been taken off the mountain, and later in the night rescuers removed two of the three bodies. Darkness prevented rescuers from reaching the third, and it was to be brought down Friday morning, said Sgt. Nick Watt of the Clackamas County Search and Rescue team.
