Newton's "The Woman of Samaria"
A great miracle in the life of a woman is recorded for us in John Chapter 4. This woman, like every sinner, was proud and sure of her favor with God. Yet all the while, she was wallowing in filth and suffering with an insatiable thirst within her soul. She was unaware of her great need until she met the LORD Jesus Christ. He came to her asking for water, and in the end, quenched her thirst by revealing Himself to her in truth. He gave her the gift of faith to believe His every Word and rejoice. She knew herself, a sinner, and she knew that He was the Saviour. She learned of His willingness to bestow “that Living Water” upon her, as Newton has written: “which whoso tastes shall thirst no more.”. How marvelous is John Newton’s sacred poem on this divine appointment! I have set Mr. Newton's hymn to music, hoping that the LORD will renew the True Gospel to the hearts of His people in this dry hour of arrogance and self-righteous religion!
