When Christians feel threatened and pushed into a corner, there is a temptation to long for a time of Christian ascendancy, where we can tell others what to do, rather than being on the receiving end. We may long for power. Generally though, the fact that we remain sinners makes power dangerous in our hands. It is true that the promise of Jesus was that we would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon us. But the power of the Spirit is the same power that was at work in Jesus who was crucified in weakness. It was the power of saving, sacrificial love and grace, not raw power. The weakness of God has proven stronger than anything that the powers and authorities can imagine. The truth of weakness and strength, i.e. the truth of love, opens up courage and happiness to us in the midst of all kinds of difficulty. And this sets us in the place to see the triumph of God's gospel in the world.
