With contraception flowing like Niagara Falls (circa 1960), unprecedented fornication rates and no 'clean-up operation' available, the pent-up demand for abortion was overwhelming. By 1972, the brake-less Sexual Revolution freight train was barreling down on the Burger Court which was obliged to find Constitutional "penumbra" and "emanations" and -- find them they did -- when they handed down Roe (1973).
Young people (those who survived the abortion and abortifacients gauntlets) will continue to flood out of the church for sexcapades until the elders awaken to teach this hard truth: contraception is the cause of this unmitigated mess. Clinical abortion can never end until the birth control faucet is first turned off in the church. This starts with pastors. If the average pastor in your denomination has but two children (e.g., the SBC), it has blown its denominational brains out.
Young people are leaving in droves because they can spot a corpse when they see one.
