CBCpreacher,

Thanks, that helps me understand.

I am a man of science, not letters, and I couldn't think of the term "Allegorical". Thank you for your kindness, and not pouncing on me for my error!

Unlike Dr. Collins, I never had a time of unbeleif, yet my training in science and more specifically in molecular genetics opened my eyes to "how" things occured, and why the evolutionary concept had some merit.

The problem is that the scientific community also tried to extrapolate into the "why" realm, in order to further a "materialistic" agenda. It was a time where "intellectuals" could not abide people of faith, so they tried to attack the foundations of that faith.

Remember that Dr. Watson of Watson & Crick fame who unraveled the mysteries of how DNA worked, believed that the system was so complex that we had to be placed here by technologically advanced space aliens. They didn't accept "materialistic" or Darwinian evolution!

So in discussions with my colleagues, I would argue OK evolution happened but by God's full involvement, but what do we do with evil? This would allow me to finally point to a need for redemption.

There is too limited space here for the full discussion. I highly reccomend you read the book. C.S. Lewis is oft quoted. A good read!

Again I ask the young earth proponents:

Why is it that so many in the Evangelical community take the Bible literally at the beginning, yet metaphoically at the end of the Bible in regards to eschatology?

Fuzzy Logic,

Dr. Collins isn't saying evolution happened apart from God, he is saying evolution is how God did it! He is using the term "evolution" in it's broadest sense, and not as Darwinian, or materialistic evolutionists use the term. The term evolution means an "unfolding", check out the Genisis account, and that is exactly what it was, a process of unfolding!
If time were a concern of God's, wouldn't it show that God was limited to have created the World in six days, and needed to REST (isn't he omnipotent, thus why the need for rest?). Wouldn't it have brought greater glory to God if he did it instantly WITHOUT rest?
Or perhaps God guided the evolutionary process over six epochs of a great length of time, and after that felt the work was complete, so no further evolution occured (his rest).
Why is it that so many in the Evangelical community take the Bible literally at the beginning, yet metaphoically at the end of the Bible in regards to eschatology?

Well maybe one could be understood and forgiven, but THREE wivws? Come on Rudy, if you can't keep things in order at home, or if you can cheat on your wife, what are we to expect from you as President.
Are these three guys the best the GOP got? If they are, I might as well stay hpme!

My question, is this a symptom or the cause of moral decline. In our local small town newspaper there seems to be as many sexual assaults of one type or another as there are drunk driving violations, maybe more.
When I came to this community 20 years ago, sexual assaults were a monthly or quarterly occurance. The rate now is daily or at the very least weekly. To my mind the internet is driving this.
It is highly unlikeky the founding fathers were concerned about Larry Flynt's "right" to publish pornography. Their concern was to be able to speak freely in matters of governance.
It also seems to me that technical applications could be used to intevene, but I'm skeptical because of the amount of commerce that internet porn generates. I have read that most of the video streaming technology has been developed for the porn industry. A large segment of software development jobs and revenue would be lost.
This will not become an issue until politicians start losing votes because of it. The problem is that because of secular relativism is now the state religion, we have lost any moral compass in order to confront the pornographers.

It seems as if there is an indirect corealation between the degree of socialism and the degree of commitment to marriage. The higher the amount of social welfare spending by the state, the lower the commitment of life-long marriage.
Maybe the significance of the motto, "In God We Trust" is greater than we realize! We certainly see a lower commitment to marriage in this country in those people who have a greater dependency on the state!

I have a vacation home in Canada, and I appreciate the $1.00 & $2.00 coins they have there (loonies and toonies). Makes sense, I would ignore polling and do what saves money, and makes sense!

Let's not let what we believe get in the way of increasing the numbers of new members? Is not Christ's redemptive work on the cross a "theology"?
What about denominational distinctives? The danger is that if you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything!
To the gentleman who doesn't believe in perseverance of the saints, why not go to Brethern,Mennonite, or Methodist church? Christ keeping us in his fold as a good shepard, is a distinctive of the Baptist denomination.

If you teach you can believe anything as long are you are sincere, for there are many paths to heaven, then people will sincerely believe to get new golf clubs and go golfing. Perhaps the long par five on hole number 14 leads to heaven.
If you teach there is no sin (except of course income inequality and pollution), then there is no need for a saviour.
If truth is relative to your time and place in history, then it's OK to go out and enjoy yourself as you please.
They have unwittingly constructed their own demise!

Mike,
I agree with your reservations about lawmakers not being involved. It does leave room for improprieties. I'm just convinced it's the right thing to do.
I do have a science background, and I still grieve the tragic loss of a lovley young woman, I guess I am a bit biased.
My fear is the "anti-intellectual", and the "my rightousness was integral in my salvation" vocal segment of Biblical Christians becoming the voice for all Biblical Christians. I'm just taking an oppurtunity to be a voice for another view for those who call Jesus, Lord and Saviour.

I guess I invited all the anti-vaccine folks to rail against the just previos post!
Are their any folks out there who do not rail against traditional medicine, who may want to support this line of reasoning?
Thanks!

Mike,
A principle of immunizations is to gain "herd" immunity. To allow some not to be immunized would permit a resevoir of infectious agent to remain, and thus increase the likelyhood of others to become infected.
To resist immunization out of fear that it sends the message that promiscuity is expected behavior would in the end allow danger to remain for the population at large. Would this not be an experession of love that Jesus commands that we have for all people?
Lets hope that the "good Christian girls" that attend "good evangelical youth groups" at "good evangelical churches" have no need for such things. But what if they marry a man who infects them in the future, that only recently came to Christ?
I also read that present day evangelicals do not differ significantly form society at large.
Sadly enough the girl I mentioned attended a good evangelical church, high school, AND college. I have no reason to believe she was promiscuos . All I know she did die from this.
Why put your daughters and grandaughters at risk, and why risk the lives of those people Jesus instructs us to love? I'm afraid this comes from the anti-anything-scientific crowd that is so prevelant in the evangelical church.

Infection would be in the realm of possibility, but hopefully not probability. I'm telling my daughter (15) she is getting a shot. No more information is needed for now. It's that simple. Too many parents think they need childrens permission to do ANYTHING, or that they have to explain EVERYTHING.
I still believe in "BECAUSE I SAID SO" I have a close friend whose daughter died of cervical cancer, not something I want for myself!

“The fact is that the vast majority of clergy members accept evolution and don’t want creationism taught in schools.”

Maybe the vast majority of pastors he associates with! Names from a web-site isn't exactly a valid sampling method. Of those that did sign, I wonder how many accept the classic atheistic Darwinist view?
Classic Darwinian Evolution is losing ground, even in the scientific community.

Are you suggesting God does not love "macho" guys, but instead prefers "bookworms"? What about David and Peter?

Moral codes come from religion. Always have! Always will! Secular humanism is the official state religion of socialists states. Canada is a socialist state.
The foundational religion during the estblishment of Canada was Christianity. The precedent was there.
To establish a new religion and replace the pre-existing religion, so as to change the moral code, the culture would have to permit this.
Kind of like me moving next to an airport, then complaining about the noise. Who was there first? Of course if the airport doesn't mind closing, so be it.
As Canada becomes more conservative, as mentioned in the article, unlikely this will happen. This will be fun to watch.

For years I suggested a sports bar/church blend. You know, big screen TV's, pool tables, kegs. This was done tounge in cheek of course, and now they have done it.
Myrrdin has very good points, that in a general sense I agree with. Would it, however, be appropriate to have this type of behavior in the Sanctuary (the article certainly didn't suggest this). Also doesn't every Baptist Church have the freedom to interpret and live out the scripture as they see fit?
In my PCA church, I drink wine at communion. Of course not to excess. Also of concern are the motives of people who attend. Does the end justify the means?
What is drunkedness, remember Jesus made wine for people who were already a bit "tipsy". Is drunkedness an event or a lifestyle?
Rev. Patrick is right to point out the sins explicitly mentioned in scripture. I wonder if Rev. Patrick points out the sin of gluttony at potluck dinners at the myriad of other Baptist Churches in the Missouri Baptist Convention. Temperance in ALL things?
My point: no cookies, casserole, or beer mugs in the sanctuary!

Neil,
Further more, IDers only want to take the reasoning to the point of a creators existance, and not about who he is. This may not be the whole journey, but it is a very important first step!

Neil,
Science is the study of God's revealation in nature. While such knowledge can not lead to salvation, it is still truth. Do you enjoy potable drinking water? Have you ever taken an antibiotic for an infection? Do you heat your home with central heat? Do you drive a car? DO YOU POST COMMENTS ON WEBSITES?
All those come from the truth of science!

Another example of where the Europeans are open to embracing orthodox thought and ideas. See my post on the Anglican Church and Tony Blair oposing homosexual adoption.
It is also interesting to me that while the secularlists in the US want Intellegent Design to be taught in religion classes, and not science classes, just where are these religion classes? Most gutless school districts lack the courage to develop such curricula, in fear of a "seperation of church and state" lawsuits from the ACLU!
"Seperation of church and state" is not in the constitution. However, that the state shall not establish an official state church is in the constitution. To me Secularlism has all the characteristics of a church, and it seems to me that it has become the official state supported church!
The trends in Europe, and even the trends in the Democratic Party, show that anti-orthodox secularlism is a loosing proposition!
Time will tell!
