Jim, good sermon by Dr. Gil Rugh. He does a good job of developing it from Abraham.
There's no such thing as "free will". When sinful man is presented with a choice, he "wills" subject to what he is enslaved to..."So let me get this straight. The ungodly have no freedom of choice to sin or not to sin. Where's the "free will? Is God unfair by not giving man a "choice", then condemning him?"
"That's why God gives us a "free will", to chose."
Completely agree my friend. Who keeps our heart beating? Who fires the nerves and synapses? Who causes the eye and brain and our other sensory organs to work? If this is God, then He controls what we see, hear and think. Then that being the case, He controls the environment around us. That being the case, He controls how we react to that environment. You see? He controls everything right down to our very bodies which produce the exact proportions of hormones to react to each and every situation, thus effecting our "choices" and "decisions".

Salvation is by God's Choice
Oh no!! Where's the free will?! Jim, this is just another indicator that God is sovereign, and we must bow to His will for us. He will be sovereign over us in life and in death. Jesus is Lord...period

‘I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster’ (Isa 45:7); ‘when disaster comes to a house, has not the LORD caused it?’ (Amos 3:6). Also, God uses evil for his purposes. The Lord sends evil spirits who do his work: 1 Samuel 16:14 says, ‘Now the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him.’

At Calvary God displayed both his hatred for sin (evil) and his sovereignty over it: "This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross" (Acts 2:23).

I have only room for so much here...cont. if needed...

Quite an interesting verse to "choose" since you seem to scoff at Jesus in John 5:25 disagreeing with you version of "deadness"
So since Scripture is clear, 'make your calling and election sure' you might hate and rebel at the thought that there is a version of "Calvinism" that is quite a delussion where so believe things about God AND ESPECIALLY that they must be one of the elect because mentally they believe "the 5 Points", Dort, the WCF and often are KJV only to boot but do not know experiencially what it is to be converted, born again of the Spirit of God no matter how much "systematic theology" they can spout.
I have to think those in such a delussion will often hate their need of being genuinely born again similar to how some Roman Catholics hate the thought of believer's baptism vainly imagining they were regenerate in baby sprinkling something they had nothing to do with.
I guess you must have missed my earlier query concerning Christ being in subjection to God's will...around the mulberry bush we go...

Isa 66.4 I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called , none did answer ; when I spake , they did not hear : but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.

There goes God choosing for us again...where's the freedom?!

Shocking
Well be shocked then.
This "dead corpse" (in your eyes) was mercifully and graciously brought by God to exactly such a choice.
In my words that would be by the conviction of the preaching of the word and the Spirit, a choosing to accept Jesus Christ unconditionally on His terms (surrender) (by what God did in my life) to repentance and faith unto salvation (new birth/regeneration) with very much a knowing if I had rejected Him I would have died at some time in my life physically and God would have sent me to hell and have been entirely right to do so.
Be shocked even more.
John 5:25
25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.
Oops, Someone disagrees with you.
Aw no...someone disagrees with me? Shoot. Anyway, I am very impressed that you chose Jesus, you must be a better person than I. Anyway, was Christ under subjection to God's will?

I have had this very same discussion not less than five people online lately and it strikes me as shocking and sad that this is so. To talk to a so called Christian, a follower of Jesus, and to hear him say, "I believe God gave me a choice to either reject or accept Jesus as Lord." A dead corpse has no life, no power and no desire to accept anything except death. Rebellion and Christianity do not go well together.

IF!!!!!!!!!!, Perhaps that was in reference to Michael's post, which was in reference to my post in another thread, which is STILL misquoted.
ONE LAST TIME, then I'll leave it untill we get there later!!
In general terms to help us understand better:
What I said:
God acts FIRST/BEFORE and APART from MAN's act. WE ARE NOT CO- EQUAL PARTICIPANTS IN THAT MOMENT. Man DOES act, but AFTERwards.
Just because God acts FIRST and APART from man in that first instance, does NOT mean that man now NEVER respond. That's NOT what I said. Check it out!
I can't understand the insistence on this non sequitur.
"FIRST and APART" - Let me at least clarify my position.
We can't deal with the synagy of God and man acting until we determine the extent of mans spiritual depravity.
Hey CV...I know how you feel. You should see what I'm going through on my blog...

I will say again...

Romans 9.17 “For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for * this same purpose have I raised thee up , that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. 18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth . 19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault ? For who hath resisted his will? 20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God *? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? 21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to * make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? 22 What if * God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known , endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: 23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, 24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?”

Unless you can explain away this passage, then one has to admit and submit to God's complete sovereignty.

CV, well done. It's a shame really that we need to be discussing this. Does the Quran belong in the church? Just as much as it would benefit the church if they read portions of the satanic bible. What benefit does that have? Smoke cigarettes in order to know what it feels like? Does that make you a better witness? That is apostasy in its glory.

Here's something to chew on...If the marriage between a MAN and a WOMAN wasn't what God intended, then why on earth give man sperm and woman an egg? To flush down the toilet? When the sperm is wasted in a man, you are going in direct violation with God's word to "replenish" the earth. Some are called to remain single, so don't use that excuse either. It is a total and complete perversion of God's well intended plan to populate to earth, and no good can come of it. God does love His creation, God detests the sin of this world.

What's the difference in accepting and embracing Islam and embracing mid-Eastern mysticism? It's been going on for years and this is just another easy step the enemy has made in painting the church with his colors. The church is being so easily reworked that I can imagine the enemy didn't realize it was going to be this easy.

Pastor Rick wrote:
Just this past Sunday, two girls were texting during the entire service. Since my sermon was on Challenges to raising Responsible Children, i dealt with the texting addiction and how people were doing it in inappropriate places and times. Of course the girls never heard a word of it.
When I first came to my present church, I dealt with a teenager for over nine months about texting in the service. I spoke with her and her parents on several occasions. Finally, I let them know that if it happened again I would stop the service and deal with it. Of course, she texted the whole service, and I held true to my word. Result: The parent screamed and accused me of impropriety for about 45 min. Then left the church along with about 40% of the congregation.
As far as looking bible up on cell phones: Cell phones may have the Holy Bible on them, but cell phone are Not Wholly Bible. It's easy for someone to start woth a phne bible, and get a text and; off they go. We provide pew bibles. If anyone needs a bible we will give them one. A hard copy, not a soft one.
Nicely done! Good for you! It warms my heart to see a pastor with your convictions and ethics...wish you were mine

I truly think a big problem today with Christian men (and women) is they are straying to close to the edge and watching how close they can get before they fall over. This is not Biblical at all. Stay away from the edge. Flee (shun, run away from, disappear from, turn away, rebel against) fornication and all that that definition implies. God says flee,, then we flee. We don't court temptation, we turn our backs on it and run! Remember, you are joined at the hip with Jesus (bond-servants), what you see, He sees...

Felony charges...I find it hard to believe that Texas has outlawed this type of discipline. Or was the defining factor due to marks on the child's skin?
With Child Protection workers, the defining moment is when someone tells on someone such as this mother. All it takes is an anonymous caller which might or might not be true. It takes a community remember and the community says no spanking or any discipline of any kind.

Anyone ever watch the movie, "Lord of the Flies"? THAT'S what happens to children without correction. Spanking is not our preferred method of discipline. Even though other children seem to need it, my children have never seemed to. They are very smart and when you lay down to facts of the whys and why nots, ,they understand and accept. We just don't ever seem to have to go past the discussion stage. Daddy said so, okay...done deal, let's move on.

Spanking is not illegal. The authorities will try and convince you that it is and persecute you accordingly, but the Law says it is not...atleast in Canada.

God is just and will never tolerate sin of any kind. These people whom God will cast into hell forever are there for a very big reason...they refused to put their faith and trust in God. Hell is real, and just as heaven will be forever hell will be as well. You can't have one without the other. It's human nature to deny that which is too bad to comprehend. man does it when the doctor tells him that he has a year to live. A woman living in communist China does it when she finds out that she is pregnant...it's part of our nature. Doesn't make the reality go away, just dopes us up for awhile and pushes it away.
