By the sound of it you may be one of these Arminian heretics so perhaps you will not perceive the truth.

If faith is not the gift of God then it is a work of man - this is the heretical salvation by works theory of the Roman Catholics, Arminians, Wesleyan .... et al.

Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Ephesians 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)

"Quickened" here means made alive IN Christ.

The Pre-quickened state is "dead in sin."

God only quickens the elect. The elect are the Remnant predestinated to be chosen/elect by God. Those whom God foreknew He predestinated and He effectually calls unto salvation. (Rom 8:29,30)

When quickened ie born again the saved person believes on Christ unto salvation.

All those who do not believe - can not believe without divine help. These are the atheists, humanists, Liberals, secularists etc, ie Reprobates on their way to hell and damnation.
