Daniel,This is a good question. The apostles did not go around badmouthing Caesar any more than Daniel and his friends dissed Nebuchadnezzar, et al. Christians in America have a Love-Him-If-He's-a-Republican/Hate-Him-If-He's-A-Democrat (but honor the office, ha ha) relationship to the Office of the Presidency. Both are wrong, of course. I watched in shame the jubilation exhibited by Christians after the shameful circumstances surrounding Mr. Clinton's shameful shenanigans. You would have thought they'd paid off the national debt the way Mr. Clinton's impeachment was received. On the other hand, Mr. Bush can do no wrong in some of these same circles. Christians in Iran/Iraq/Darfur/Burma/wherever are in a more historically normal situation, that is where the government is wholly opposed to the spread of the Gospel (I am not saying it is right, only that it is usual), and yes, they should honor their government. DOes that mean they should rejoice in the wicked, murderous practices of the man who holds the office? No. How is this worked out in daily life. I would like to know the answer to this from someone who has lived it. It might be akin to how a beliving wife honors a wicked, ungodly husband, but I do not know, and of course there is a time for revolution, but ... |

OK. After reading all these comments and pondering over Dr. Paisley's life, I am prepared to make a pronouncement: Dr. Paisley is over 80. His legacy is positive and intact. It is time to throw the good Doctor a lavish, wonderful, memorable Retirement Party, followed by a year-long triumphant Gospel-Preaching tour around the world, after which he could spend his final years visiting the various churches that have been established under his care and influence. People who line Dr. Paisley up with the devil need to stop. People who say Dr. Paisley is a 20th century Elija need to stop. He was a great man, a great preacher, a great man of God, and all that said, it is time for him to retire. |

I listened to the sermon, and what I heard was that Brother Paisley did not say he had been wrong about anything and that he was happy he had been applauded for stepping down. It's possible that I did not hear everything as my cheap laptop's volume doesn't go up very high. Also, I am probably hindered by my living in America and not fully understanding Ulster politics. It just seemed strange to me that very little info was given and Dr. Paisley basically said, "Go ahead, make my day" to people who want to see him go away. But, I really do want to understand and hope people from the UK can enlighten me, or, which might be more appropriate, tell the yanks to stay out of their business as we have enough problems with our own politics to looky-loo into someone else's across the pond. which is fair enough, certainly. |
