I read the story in the Wall Street Journal; they seemed to say the increase in middle-class suicides was due to the recession (people losing jobs and houses, retirement accounts devalued, etc).

Suicide is the great "non-story" of our times---local news media will gladly report snakebites, car accidents, fires, but not suicides. Someone jumps in front of a train and they say, "...authorities are searching for the cause of this incident.."
I think those "authorities" have a pact with the news media to not report suicides.

The reason: suicide is contagious, if people "on the edge" see one happen, they may think "it's OK for me, too" or will learn a new method. Look at the bridges around you: many have had to have fencing installed to keep people from jumping. There is one in Los Angeles where a famous movie producer killed himself last year (and it had fencing installed!)

Liberals will love this news--maybe this new "gang of eight" will recommend
1. women be allowed to be priests
2. same-sex marriage be allowed, and
3. homosexuality removed as a sin.
But wait...don't they already have a church with those characteristics: the Episcopal Church? (not to mention other liberal churches)

Oh yes, the Constitution Party, the one that has different names in different states, the one that has no one representing it in Congress or any of 50 State Legislatures, it received 120,000 votes in 2012 Presidential Election where Obama got nearly 66 million, Romney 61 million.
Right, I got it.
A very important but minor player in the overall US political scene.

Whewww! I had to clean my reading glasses off and then my computer screen to make sure I was reading it correctly!

For a minute, I thought Philip Howard (very well know to all, I think) had died! Good to know he's still kicking.

Now, who is this guy? I've never heard anything about him. What college did he play football for? Or was he a tennis player at Wimbledon? Or won a few Master Tournaments knocking the little white ball into the holes?

Maybe I'm a little dense, OK, but I don't get it--why is this guy worth any mention at all?

But I like the input on loud worship. Too bad electric speakers and amplifiers had not been invented in the Old Testament.

I doubt this connection with Alinsky will be covered in the media that most people watch.

Also, Rufus, I'm surprised you left out John 10:27-"..the sheep know his voice.." Do you think that the American people (the sheep in your allusion) know the voice of Jesus and listen to him?

Better to ask, "What is the gospel?" and "How do you think God is like?" rather than ask about trivia.

I still think most churches do not teach their own doctrines clearly, so their members do not even know what makes their own church different from the one down the street.

For most Christians, attending church once a week is enough, kind of like a card you have to punch to say you showed up at work. Asking them to study a book between those times is just too much to ask.

Atheists may know more about other religions because they watch PBS programs that people who attend church would not watch. They may even be searching and open to spiritual matters, while people attending church feel comfortable with what they have found and don't see any need to ask questions or seek answers outside of their church.

Supermarkets are happy with the increase-more money out there to buy their goods. Farmers are happy with the increase, too---more supermarkets will buy their goods, and the price doesn't matter. Agribusiness probably has lobbyists in DC to best massage this news--that is why it was released "quietly." And good luck in finding the news item in any newspaper or even on the internet.

5th item: older electronic equipment will reset the time on the old schedule, so beware on the first sunday in april.
also, it reminds me of the opposition that churches had in the 1800s to the introduction of time zones (which were needed when the railroad was completed from west to east).
also, some areas like arizona do not follow the DST at all.

I guess Tebow gets many invitations to speak at conferences, churches, etc. so he has to turn down most of them. This one may have "slipped through the cracks" of his handler's check, kinda like the pastor that was going to speak at the Obama inauguration but was "disinvited." Some see Tebow as a shining example in the NFL, as if there were never any Christians there before, nor there today. As younger and better QBs join the NFL, his star will lose its luster. But the "true believers" in him will never lose faith. Maybe he would be better off playing in the Canadian league.

I recommend David Green's great little book, "More than a Hobby" about how they got the store started. Interesting that they close, not only on Sundays, but also at 8pm to allow their employees a chance to have a family life.

I heard a Christian radio network's program ask what would you do if you knew something like this was coming? But they didn't research the story to see whether the people in this real case had any advance warning.

So, if they didn't, and it looks like they did not, since they were going to work, school, living their ordinary ways.

Why would any US city have any advance warning? Has there ever been an advance warning of other meteors heading our way?
Even the asteroid that came as close as some weather satellites to our planet was not given much "advance warning" by the news media, who seemed more interested in a U.S. senator drinking water on camera, or the hideout of a former LA policeman.

Osteen sounds a lot like the New Thought speakers of years ago, like Joseph Murphy, Florence Scovel Shinn, and James Allen. I sometimes hear traces of the same thoughts whenever I hear a sermon sound more like "psycho-babble."
But didn't Jesus say, "If thou canst believe, all things are possible."?
And the Psalmist, "Goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life "?
I think its a question of emphasis.

Can you say, "follow the money?" How many other places have buildings named after people who were not perfect, or close to it! Another conflict here is the "free-market" focus when Adventists are restricted by laws that Paul made fun of, "Don't touch, don't eat (caffeine, meat)". You would think Allred would have funded a new building in Washington DC for the Cato Foundation or Hillsdale College.

Driscoll has noticed something that many people have noticed for a long time. I think a bigger issue is the division between blacks and whites in the Church, and the preaching of people of Jeremiah Wright, which only leads to more blame and division (eg. "a white man's greed keeps the world in need"). It is well known that 99 percent of blacks voted for Obama, and that includes Christians who went right after church before election day in states that have early voting. And that is despite Obama's mother being white and his father an African, someone who never experienced slavery (from whites that is).

re: polio: i still know that when i see an adult with polio, they must be over 58 years old, before the vaccine became widely used in the USA.
Gates-
1. although a college drop out, he was totally dedicated to computers instead, spending over the magical 10,000 hours mark (see Outliers book) to become so proficient.
2. How did Gates get so much money, when his products are so much cheaper than Apple's? Makes you wonder what Apple is doing with all their money from their sky-high profit margin.
And what happened to Steve Jobs money?

"Methinketh thou protesteth too much" is what I think of Tebow fans who see any criticism of him as an underhanded way to criticize him as a devout Christian. (I thought it was really an underhanded way to criticize him as a Gator).

Do you as a Christian want the world to praise you for your beliefs?

James 4:4 "Don't you know that friendship with the world is enmity with God"

Now, if he is traded to the Jaguars, he may get a better chance to play and then we can talk about his expertise as a NFL QB.

If the evangelical church is in decline, when was it in ascent? During the 1950s, when blacks had to sit in the back of the bus? Were those the Andy Griffith Show Good Old Days we wish we could have again?
And, if it was in ascent in those "good old days," what did it lead to? What was the great influence? What happened to all those "converts" that you see on the old Billy Graham Crusade programs?

Thanks for the previous posters here who have made an interesting debate--something I can't find easily on radio, TV or newspapers. I side with "4more" in seeing greater dangers in Liberalism (or Progressivism), but remembering that all Republicans are not conservative. Also, 81 vs 88 percent: so what? Did it make any real difference in key states like Florida, Ohio? I heard that Obama did not win any state that requires photo ID for voting.
To end on a positive note: most US state legislatures are controlled by Republicans; so there's an opportunity to work for change.
