Scott... we should go to Gods word to determine what the punishment should be for stealing. In our relativistic culture most people have come to the conclusion that morality and righteousness are subjective to each individual, but Gods word says otherwise. He is the standard of righteousness in this world for all nations, tribes and people's. Leviticus 6:1-5 says if a person robs someone or defrauds a person he should fully pay back the value of the thing stolen and a fifth extra or in some cases depending on the thing stolen he is required to pay back double Exodus 22:3, and this of course is in the case that no one was physically harmed in the process of the theft. Now imagine for a second Gods law was not the standard of right and wrong, and the government had the power to determine right and wrong and make any law they wanted and it was considered righteous, they could then say things like you should be executed for stealing a piece of gum from the candy store, or any person who spits on the ground is required to pay a million dollar fine or life in prison, or all Jews blacks and Christians should be killed. You see, we can't make up what we think should be the punishment for certain crimes, God already determined that and he is a loving, just and fair God.
